They have been dropping in the last few days I was hoping they would have kept flying but here they are thousands on the lake this morning. I look to see how many don’t go out with the rest to gauge how sick a flock is I also look for lumps on the ice when the flights are out feeding. Sad to see when they start piling up on a chunk of ice. Not uncommon to see dead geese in the fields and on the roads if they stick around a while. Some you see walking like they are lost mostly snows and blues but a few Canadian ones are found too.

I stopped raising chickens because the flu kept killing my flocks twice in one year. I lost 70 birds spring and fall 35 each time.

Thousands and thousands of Canadians here. A lot never leave unless it gets where the river freezes up totally. Last evening the sky in ever direction was alive with birds not sure I have seen something like before.

We never got a lot of ice so the lake opened up quickly the iPad camera does not do it justice there’s times when the flocks go on for over a mile or more. Very loud when the big flight go out all at once it’s something to see but the flu is a real pain in the rear.

Late getting here missed us on the trip South that’s a fraction of what we’ve had in the past more might show up or fly over we never know. I try to keep an eye out for the bird flu I hope to have chicken again someday. As long as the flu is in the flocks it’s not practical to start any chicks.

I've only been seeing Canada geese here, but seems like the last couple days more have been showing up and dumping in the fields.

We get both sometimes they end up here other times they go east of us there was a bunch of snows landing to the east a few days ago then some showed up on the lake. They seem spread out this year not a bad thing if they are carrying the flu might be the flu that’s thinning them out. The winds blowing now the ice is popping that might get them airborne.

It used to be that the snows/blues would come down further east in South Dakota in the fall and then come north a bit further west in the state in the spring. At least that's what it used to be 30 to 40 years ago.

We used to have about a two week decent window in middle of November to hunt snows/blues but that has changed. Way more corn now grown in northeast SD and eastern ND so in the fall, the geese are bulked up on grain calories and can blow through areas in short order if say the weather truly changes and a hard freeze up comes. I've heard of stories that they'll do Sand Lake NWR up in northern SD to DeSoto NWR south of Sioux City, IA in 3 days.

I used to always hear snows/blues honking at least a few nights in the later fall going overhead. Not anymore.

I wonder if the coyotes and coons get bird flu from eating Law Dog's dead snow/blue geese in the spring..?

I'm in southern Arkansas and all the ducks and geese left 2 weeks ago. Seeing and hearing them for a couple months and it like someone s apped their finger. Quiet now.
Frogs have been out snakes are starting and I saw a gator yesterday. Time to head home.

Never heard of it impacting mammals a few humans maybe at the chicken places have been reported. It doesn’t impact every bird species but there must be different strains of the flu. I hear of ducks dying from it in other areas of the country but not here not even the domestic ones. Eagles have been following the flocks during the flu not seeing any dead ones its not killing them here that I’ve ever come across.

Geese are gone for now only several eagles on the ice some ducks skimming the ice pretty quiet at the moment will keep an eye out for dead or sick ones.

I've heard that all (real) influenza starts with birds. One reason why the yearly "flu" strain tracking begins in what's happening in East Asia in the interface between birds and humans.

I was told one time by a physician that my low occurrence of real influenza has probably been enhanced by my exposure to wild birds, although there must be more to it than just that because outside of handling a good number of pheasant pelts a year, I have a lot less exposure to wild birds, especially waterfowl, than I used to in the past. Probably just some genetic stuff involved as well.

I know I've only had "stay in bed" real influenza less than 10 times in 50+ years that I can remember, starting with doing a block of houses for Halloween when I was 10 years old and sicker than a dog. Last time was in in bed sick for multiple days was when I had "covid" (other family members got tested but I didn't) after Christmas of 2021 and over New Years of 2022.

Heading north I think they are caught between snow belts now more coming in every hour looking at a few thousand landing in the open water now. We have high winds today out of the south you would think they would take the win but the snow might hold them back. Warming up here the next several days will see what develops.

Field across the road from the house today. A fraction of what’s in the area now.
