Helping the neighbors cut up some trees, he needed the big saw for some old elms he needed cut up to move them easier. Has heart issues so he runs an electric chainsaw so when the battery is done he’s done too.

Anyway I had a couple fox sets in the cornfield along the trees about 6 weeks ago haven’t done anything since I pulled the traps a month ago. I let my mutt out, in no time she’s working a bent over stalk pretty hard zeroed in on it big time. I go over and take a look and I see my chunky waxed dirt from the set I had there. Amazing sense of smell on a K-9 to pick that up so quickly after a month.

Just something to think about maybe folks add too much lure to sets.

If they really like something to the point they want to get it or roll on it volume can create more intrest. Sometimes its not about getting them to smell it but rather creating enough intrest they will overcome their caution and commit to working the set. Your dog doesn't have any of the caution a lot of coyotes have. But there are definitely times less is more. Especially on the coyotes that have had a lot of pressure on them.

There are some exceptions but for the most part im not a fan of lure or baits that if coyotes get too big of a smell they lose intrest. I want them to want to taste it or wear it. Just have to know how use them properly especially if above ground

I was surprised how she found it so quick after a month was the point. I might of applied lure twice with a lot of wind and moisture thst has come and gone yet she was right on it for being a herding mutt. I found that interesting.

Id agree with the reluring part. I have never relured a set unless its a remake. I once caught a coyote after like 82 days after making set. It was a step down dirt hole that had been flood with water at least twice and frozen into a solid chunk of ice. They will definitely smell a good formulated lure their for a long time. Had a trapper in N Dakota test some lure for me. Soon after putting sets in it started snow and kept snowing. Sets were under feet of snow for over a hundred days. After snow all melted he caught 2 coyotes at a couple of sets.

Back when I started using waxed dirt. I had sets that got buried under snow for along time. Same results. I try not to relure, but then I get to the point where I think I just have to tweak something if a set doesn't connect. LOL

I also very seldom relure. I use gland lure type lures a lot, and a little goes a long way with those type lures, too much lure can cause either wariness or a lowering of interest. With food lures you are much less likely to get detrimental results by overluring.

I have seen where a coyote dug through 6-8 inchs of snow at a set I pulled 3-4 weeks earlier. I am like yes sir in that if you can apply to much I dont want to use it.

What did Ol' Matt Jones say and I'm paraphrasing here, "All we trappers are doing is creating scent stations for these coyotes after we're doing trapping."
I have seen it time and time again on my 'line.
