Ran across a video this morning on net. Guy using a mussel shell for a turkey call. Well holly crap. I have handled literally tons of shell in my lifetime. Used turkey call pots with slate, glass, copper, not even sure what all. Whole time I have box of odd shell I collected from various places I worked.
Just dug out couple old common one from the mess. Yes I could even make them work. So guess who is going to have one or more of these in their vest pocket this spring in woods. This kid.
Anyone else seen or done this trick
These aren't pretty need cleaned up if your so inclined. But they work for me. Each has different sound and I'm sure with sand paper can be adjusted.
These shell are well over 20 some years old.
However.
It would be wrong for me not to say. Know you local laws and regulations before you pick up even dead shells.

WOW!!!
I had a few I throw out in the wife flower garden. I went and retrieved one in pretty bad shape and used a wooden pencil that lead was broke on it. It made some impressive clucks. Thanks for the interesting info on that. Excellent!!!

I've only used box calls that was all we/I ever needed to be successful.

Now that's a cool idea !

I'd like to know how the concept of the wingbone call came about. Not as simple process to manufacture. I mean it kinda is, in theory, if you're familiar with the process.

Anyway, sorry for the derail.

Not a derail is just another Turkey call.

Guy has to wonder how most any of the calls came about. Wing bone is just using what you already have. Gotta wonder how some one first decided use a box? My guess it was just because some one knew friction was key. Box is amplifier and tone board same as shell or pot. Could probably take any number cheap bowls use striker on it. Buy thats not cool right?
Guy can use a soda straw or pen barrel same as Wing bone call. Seen guys use the little bar straws do pretty good Turkey call.
When I was a kid I could do all kinds bird a animal sounds by voice. Drove my parents and maybe few teacher's crazy.
I did all my crow and 99% of my goose calling by mouth. Got tubed multiple times in one year and that skill is now gone.
But I find some simple thing others don't interesting.

Ok, I’ve never hunted turkey, let alone my knowledge of calls are very limited . I did make a call once after watching an outdoors program years ago. Took a medicine bottle and a rubber glove.… what do you use to scrape across the mussel shell with to produce the sound?

Ive seen the rubber glove piece of inter tube on a bottle or tube. That I have never tried.

As for what to rub on the shell. In the picture you will see a stick called a striker. I actually found the one in the picture on trail in woods. Basically just press the tip of that dowel into the shell and drag it. Lots of videos out there of guys using slate pot call. Works same with the shell.
I would have posted that video but I don't know that post videos trick.
