try to remember when you allow an animal to have some of your lure/bait it shouldnt be a synthetic try to go with a natural lure/bait that would be palatable to the target species
with beaver i would try to incorperate buckwheat honey with maybe oil sac oil ...i try to keep everything from the animal tasting it and use a very desireable visual to make them travel over or thru the trap
Beaver go crazy for buckwheat honey

Sac oil or glycerin is your standard. I tend to try and get the lured set on the upwind side of where you know they’ll be/ traveling. If I can’t, I’ll always put it upstream of the area so that when cold sets in or night comes, the thermals will pull the scent towards the water. The scent is then carried close to water level in the direction of the water flow.

Obviously if you want an oil slick, and that is your desired result, you would want to use something that isn't water soluble. Use an oil material that would fit your needs. P Glycol and Glycerin are both water soluble.

Personally I don't want my lure into the water too much. The thermals and moist air will carry your scent quite well placed along the water table.

I’m with Bob on this and would not want a trail of lure odor all along the bank downstream. That being said some do and are very successful doing it. If that effect is desired I would go with mineral oil.
