My wife has a bowel obstruction. She is having a GJ tube inserted today. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. I’m sure they will train us in it’s use but it’s all new to us.

They'll probably send a home nurse after she gets out to do it a few times, but pay attention cause sooner rather than later you'll have to do it...

I don't have any experience with feeding tubes except when our first born was in the NICU, but I do have to mess with catheters and such and a big thing is to avoid infections. Keep it clean as you can

Keep it clean around the insertion area, don't get it snagged on anything, flush the tube with water after every feeding. The nurses will definitely instruct you on proper care.

As others have stated, you'll have a home health nurse that'll show you both the in's and out's . Praying for a smooth recovery.

My wife has one. She has what is called a Mickey. It’s a small port where a tube is attached for the feeding. Home health care came and monitored for a while. Very simple to use. Hers can be used like an iv or just dumped into a 60 cc syringe.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately they couldn’t clear the obstruction with the j part and only got the g part in. She is being fed now intravenously. Coupled with her cancer reoccurrence we are up the creek right now but there are still some less desirable alternatives. Prayers appreciated.
