If memory serves me right, some of those trucks had lifter issues. Sludge oil would make them stick and tick. I thought they were OK till 2008 that the 99-07 vortex motors lacked AFM active fuel management , those are the collapsing lifters that never get enough oil the local shop does AFM deletes reprograming them and replacing all the lifters after they do that they get a lot more life out of them. as I understand the 4.8 never had AFM and a lot of the cargo vans also never tried to run AFM it was something they did on trucks and SUV to make milage standards. that said , any of them with long oil change intervals or too thick of oil could have issues , those all needed 5w30 for more flow and I know a lot of people would run 10w30 or 10w40
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Between the lifters and clogged screens on sending units the any sludge in the oil will cause problems.

I had this problem with my 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 5.3 at 140,000 miles, my mechanic deleted the AFM and replaced a couple of lifters and it purrs like a kitten!

Like mentioned, sounds like the classic lifter issue. Not a big deal. My issue with my 2012 5.3 is the low oil pressure at about 3000 miles into an oil change. Some Lucas oil treatment helps, I installed a higher volume pump which didn’t do much. No tick though, so I thought it was the sensor & screen but it’s not. Main bearings get slopped out on them sometimes so a motor swap or just a new truck is in my future.

Put some miles on it to clean it out and change the oil right away. It can work before you try an expensive repair.

Exhaust leaks can make a ticking noise. They can also come and go as components heat up and cool down. This too. Usually the exhaust manifold.

Had lifters fail twice with that engine. Both times at approximately 68,000 miles. They never fixed the tiny lifters they use. They went to synthetic oil instead. I bought a Toyota and really regret that move. POS.

I put one of these on my 2015 to stop it from dropping cylinders and save my lifters. Just plugs into the port under the steering wheel where you would pull codes for maintenance. Boost
