Any of you southerners have experience with this breed? We just picked up a 1year old pup from a rescue shelter. He's not full bred but by his markings I'd say his lineage is pretty strong .He's not much for our northern Michigan weather but he has a strong interest in the local squirrel and rabbit population

Depending on bloodline they can be quite skittish, particularly around strangers. Best way to describe it would be standoffish and very attached to their people. That can be a very good thing in that they aren't easily caught up by strangers, bad if it's one of the more aggresive (hog dog) bloodlines. The hog dog lines have a high tendency to bay and can play hob on other pets such as cats.

Watch for deafness or vision issues as the merle gene comes with those possibilities.

This is my daughters dog "Daisy"...The breed is highly protective, aggressive toward threats, and super athletic....Squirrel dog extraordinaire, and full of that never quit attitude all curs have.

In short, they will be your best friend.

Ours has markings very similar to yours.Does seem to be timid toward strangers and does seem to be possessive of both my wife and I.Gets along good with our other 2 dogs,he seems to be a great house dog, curious what he's like once this snow goes away and we're able to really get out go outside.

They love to play frisbee, and their catching skills & verticle leap will amaze you....Once mature if anyone crosses you, whoa unto them because they are tenacious with a capital T.

Daisy is mature now at 5 yrs old, and she took down a mature male 150 lb Burnese Mountain dog in about 5 secs at 2 yrs old...They are formidable.

All good info. I had a thin line named crazy eyes, and a thick line named butter bean.
