Ok guys ,,, serious question. I know our stuff is top
Notch… but my concern is about submarines in the straits of Hormuz… Iran does have subs in there and very likely could hit tankers or try to blockade it somehow… obviously our navy is hunting them,,, but,,, other countries like china, Russia, could potentially have subs in the region as well. Can our technology accurately tell an Iranian submarine from a Chinese or Russian submarine??
Do they have certain signatures that distinguish between them? And can Chinese/russian submarines do the same as to not accidentally fire on United States submarines???

Yep they have different radar dogs and the like if I'm remembering right. Honestly by now we can probably tell whit it is by how the engine is pinging....and I'm only slightly joking. We're also pro tracking any semi decent threat as soon as they leave Port.

According to google, yes they can tell the different class subs apart. They can even tell some individual subs by there unique sound.

We also have eyes in the sky in the form of satellites. I imagine that there's at least one assigned to doing daily head counts of just what is tied up alongside in port and what's not.

From recent reading . We drop listening devices in places we want to watch that relay back to our surveillance plains and we can tell what type of sub it is from several things. From sounds the propeller makes, sounds the hull makes under pressure, motor/ drive noises. It got pretty technical but unbelievable how accurate the surveillance systems we have sound.

I'm assuming all of these data sources are uplinked and networked for some pretty impressive real time data on just where every moving part is in theater.

They were doing this in the movie The Hunt for Red October and that came out in 1990, was supposed to be highly accurate, and based on real life 1975 era stuff. I'm sure they are so far passed that now we don't even know what to ask about.

There was only a single submarine from Iran that they didn't know exact location at time Epic Fury started. Rest were all accounted for.

USCENTCOM just released a list of assets utilized in first 24 hours - rather impressive - good to see A-10s used again........

They sure can using passive sonar called a towed array, sonobouys and dipping sonar on helocopter. They can also by the frequency and pulse width its active sonar as well as anything else it might be emitting. Strait of hormuz is a dangerous place but I'd suspect that shore installations be destroyed in the early stages of the campaign.

Not related to the topic of submarines, but when I was in the Coast Guard, we could collect a sample of oil in the waterway, and a lab could match it to the engine it came from.

I'm going to go out on a limb and figure that mines would be a very real danger in the bottle neck. I'm not sure if it was there or exactly where a USN ship struck a mine and was rescued and guided out of the minefield by a RCN ship.
