Hey Dog,

Are all the boats company owned or are some private owned and leased on to the company?

Sounds like you have a "Manager" that suffers from the Peter Principle..........The Peter Principle, states that in a hierarchy, people are promoted based on success in their current job until they reach a position where they lack the skills to perform, becoming incompetent, and thus remaining in that role, leading to inefficiency. This means organizations eventually fill management roles with individuals who are no longer succeeding, but rather stuck at their "level of incompetence," a situation often called Final Placement Syndrome.
Its either time to wait it out or move on. Just my opinion.

My “stand out”? Quote “too perfect”!!! My numbers are too good, my exception time was too low (yeah exception time isn’t a good thing), and my customers had nothing bad to say about me. So basically instead of focusing on everyone else improving, I need to drop to their level.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very outspoken and don’t mind speaking my mind to anyone no matter what their title is and I screw off like a pro. I just get the work done, then play. I’m the only Tech for 14 counties so if course I know all my regular customers and have a good relationship with them. I get all my yearly training done by mid February, I hate things hanging over me. I’m definitely not the smartest tech out there, but when I come across something new I take notes for the next time.

So yeah, start screwing off more, tick off some customers, and miss my training on some months and I’ll be good to go…

If workers did their job right all the time, with little to no direction from management, managers would have far less to do. Managers need people who can't work without guidance.

My advice would be to meet with the main captain and explain that the other captain has different expectations. Ask him how you should handle it. Seems to me there should be some standard work requirements posted so that both captains and deck hands follow the same program. You cannot be expected to work with two different captains doing things different ways. That is to much to ask of employees.

That new rule indicates a lack of management involvement at the floor level. I'm not talking about micromanagement but setting clear expectations and then following up to see that those expectations are being met on the floor. Instead, your chief in charge is making rules to cover his butt at the cost of efficiency.

I might have a little firmer conversation. Like: "I don't think it's fair to the crew or me to be expected to do the same thing two different ways. Something needs to be addressed. My hands and I want to continue working on the boat but if it can't be accomplished then I am concerned, we have may have no other choice but to transfer."

Gotcha,

I ask because there were brothers that raced from around Pittsburgh that had Tugs. Davey Johnston was one, can't remember his brothers name.

Kinda hard to have clear expectations when you change them every 30min . Had another meeting today , basically boiled down to goin though a bunch of pictures he took and taking about how stuff wasn't the way he wanted it....but then ....again , refused to elaborate. Said we're just gonna have to keep trying to figure stuff out till he's satisfied.... Like this seems like a lot of extra stuff vs just telling me where you want me to put stuff .. heck I don't even think he really knows what he wants .

Donovan, your mistake is that you're working for someone else. You're capable and creative enough to make a good living back home on your farm, with your wife. You could bump up the stock and plant raising and selling and build all sorts of stuff for sale.
