I'm not sure this will play outside of Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/reel/911574611613874My former paratrooper kid found and shared it with me. I thought it was pretty cool. How much of our past that we don't know.

I'm surprised that mountain lions haven't made it back into northern New York state by now. If they aren't there now, I suspect that will be in the future.

There are many reported sightings but as of yet no definitive photos or proof. With all of the game cameras out there I've yet to see a photo of one posted on the internet that is proved positive in NY. Any NY hunter that observes one and cares about the NY deer population, should practice SSS. LOL

[quote] The mountain lion that strolled from SD to CT where it was killed by an automobile, spent the night in Saratoga County NY. DEC had hair samples that matched the cat DNA. [quote]
I remember that one but forgot it was hit by a vehicle.
When the SD GF&P research collaring of lions in the Black Hills was rather new and novel, we used to get some interesting stories of specific cats. I remember one wandered to way southeast OK and got hit by the train. Another's collar went dead way up in the arrowhead of northern MN. I think another one ended up jumping through a store window in suburban Chicago.
We don't hear many of those stories anymore. I don't know why. Maybe other state governments were freaked out by the long range connections and told the SD agency folks such stories didn't need to be shared that publicly.
My next door neighbor likes various a ways from home hunting adventures-- he just got back a full mount larger cinnamon phase black bear after a couple of years that he took in WY. Anyway, he's tried hunting mt lions in the Black Hills several times and finally connected two weeks ago.
It ended up being a younger female but he appears to have a good story behind it. The picture I saw looked like he shot the cat through the head so I asked him about it. He said he waited for it to turn but it wouldn't so he took the shot he had. He claimed it was with a really nice shooting lever action .30/30 he has, open sights, and at about 80 yards. He was pretty pumped in any regard.

Wouldn’t take too much stock in that ADK deer herd estimate. Buck harvest in most ADK WMU is slightly less than 1/ sq. Mile. But private land areas inside the ADK Park where they actively mange the forest, there are significantly more than 1 deer/ sq. mile. To answer your question, close to 3 million acres in the 6 million acre ADK Park, are designated forest preserve. These preserves acres are mostly climax forest types with little understory and most have not been logged for over 100 years, very poor whitetail habitat.

NYSDEC was reluctant to release the info but it finally came out. I don't blame them.Confirm it and play it up and here comes the feds and the Endangered Species Act.

jaguar, puma, cougar and mountain lion are all the same species according to recent studies and they are more of a sub species similar too the grey wolf it more based on location and colour phases than actual different species The Jaguar is a separate specie AND genus.

Absolutely.

We went from "maybe there are a few around" to an established season in less than 30 years. The ESA never got in the way and the National Forest Service (the land where most of the South Dakota mountain lions are found on) didn't have a problem with it either. Things may be different in more "progressive" states...
