It's a corn lifter to smooth out the field after the corn has been picked, not combined.

The reply's make sense.
And just my opinion it was originally a stone rake.
Used to rake stones out of the grain fields before planting.
It also killed sprouting weeds at the same time.
Once the stones were exposed, they were picked up.
