Sitting here listening to thunder. When spring rains come early and heavy enough they migrate up river. Get held up by a couple dams not far away. KS allows 6 fish two a day. Keeping my fingers crossed. The only fish oil I ever used that came close to spoonbill oil was trout oil. Pretty good eats too. Lots of trimming required. Takes awhile.

Do you use all the red meat to make the oil? I always thought the red meat would be great pocket set bait. We can't use any of it in Missouri

What would be the average size of the ones you catch, Danny?

The males, which are smaller, have big gobs of fat in their abdomen. That fat is what I render. That red meat is a good coon bait. Decent coyote and cat bait also.

Best eating fish in the river IMO

Love snagging spoonies. They're far from my favorite as far as table fare goes.

Haven't been snagging for several years, hopefully I will be able to go this season.

Gonna have to try my hand at spoonbill oil. And trout oil as well this year..

You and the missus should drive over and fish Lock and Dam #2 on the Arkansas River. I think the limit is 2 spoonbill but you can fill up the boat with catfish.

Don't care to eat them as we catch a lot better tasting fish around here in my opinion. Spoonbill are the best bait you can use in a pocket set on the river or creek. The oil just flows out on the water from them. Best coon catches ever using spoonbill.

Neosho river has been running of late. I heard they are going to dredge Redmond, and they will try to keep it down all year. Might not need much rain for a good run this year.

We will be on the Neosho arm of Grand lake, on march 18 thru Saturday. Anyone close to the area is welcome to come aboard. I believe we will get to the Twin bridges area by noonish, on Wednesday the 18th!

This isn’t true.
Missouri has no restrictions on bait used for trapping.
Game fish may not be used for fishing bait, but may be used for trapping.
