Where is a good place to start looking for them at. I know everyone says farm fields but other then ag fields is there any other typical place a guy could start a search?? I have hills over looking river with some gravely areas and I'm in Native country and where they lived.

Thanks

Snowy I would start looking at the gravel areas. I would look for higher flat spots along the river before the hilly areas then search the banks where high water erodes the banks.

Look up cleggs adventures on YouTube. He does a lot of hunting along the Ohio River and you could get a lot of tips from his channel

Thanks DRF.
I have looked some but to no avail. There are still dugouts visible where they laid underground in sallow pits and covered with willows to catch live eagles for tail feathers. Then they take tail feather and let the eagle fly. There has to be some history here from the past.

The advantage of ag fields is the ground gets turned over ( much less then years ago ) and that helps, especially if it was ripped which I believe they set the rippers at about 11 inches deep but the field this arrowhead was found was plowed very shallow so not as much gets brought up. Your neck of the woods I would look for wash outs along the river banks.

DRF is right, eroded banks are good, especially if immediately adjacent to a hump of high ground, think campsite....

I've talked with guys from WY that look for teepee rings and find them after high winds /rain move the dirt. I'm guessing the natives collected stuff same as we do. I do know they find (my self as well) Paleo, Archaic, Woodland and so on from different time frames on the same camp sights.

You can find arrowheads about 20 feet in front of DRF, if you're fast enough to get in front of him.

Quick trip to a spot I hunted Friday but got rained out. Red one was earlier then what I believe is a preform and a broken one that would have been nice. Big chunk I find those now and again and always wonder what they were making with them.

Upper left piece looks like maybe Attica chert? What part of Illinois are you in?

Ok. There is another chert up by Galena and that looks like it. Can't remember what it's called.

Never gets old… I have over 600 plus peices I’ve found through out the years…to find something that’s been laying there at least a minimum of 1000 years is fascinating.

The majority of the stuff I find is usually from the archaic period… although I do find some woodland/hopewell stuff.

Keep the pics coming!! Enjoy seeing them.
