Great video with lots of information. It's easy to see there's a big difference between Nevada cats and our Iowa cats. At least Rinella got himself a good book on bobcats.

Good information. Wondering what would happen if two buyers both had the high bid, both bid exactly the same price? How is it decided which buyer gets the lot?

Good information. Wondering what would happen if two buyers both had the high bid, both bid exactly the same price? How is it decided which buyer gets the lot? "That's why buyers bid to the penny! Buyer A will bid eveything with a .44 on the end, Buyer B will bid with a .99 ending etc.!" In theory, Monster Toms is correct. It still happens sometimes. Usually it is decided with a coin flip at the sales I've been to, sometimes if two buyers have a bunch of ties (they both ended with the same penny amount) each buyer will take every other one.

I've been a big fan of Rinella for years now. I think he portrays hunting and trapping in the positive light that it should be in. He is the only TV personality that I will watch. His podcast is also top notch. Lots of fascinating episodes about trappers with interesting life stories, or books about trapping or historical trappers from the past, many of them lesser-known ones.

I've been wondering what the differences were. Now I know. I also figured out that I need a wider board There are a ton of pictures of Eric's ruler floating around, think I've even got one myself somewhere. But I know several trappers who claim to have lost money stretching to his dimensions. I think they are a little wide on the smaller cats, myself. But you don't want it stretched on a pencil either. Rule of thumb I use, once you get over 36" in length, you want as wide of a belly as you can have, without losing length. If your pelt starts inching back up the board you are going too wide, if you can do it wider without losing length, you are going too narrow. I try different stretchers every few years, always trying to get something better. Currently I like solid stretchers for my large cats and did my smaller cats on adjustable stretchers this year. I don't like the road cone shape you get on a truly big cat if you use an adjustable stretcher. Frankly I prefer solid boards for put up, but I have some adjustable stretchers I made that I am liking the finished product on small and medium cats better. Plus they are just more versatile, I've got at least a couple dozen solid cat boards of various sizes, but it never fails when you are pulling cats out of the freezer at the end of the year and putting them up, you will end up with all the solid boards that are just the right size for the cat in your hand, already in use. Pretty good video and explanation, but the cameraman should have spent more time with the camera pointed at the cats bellies while they were talking rather than at Eric and Alan's faces.

Talking to Eric one year, he told me mine were narrow and had me take a picture of his ruler. He said its okay to go narrow with cats under 36" if it can get you to the 36" mark. But if you got a cat 36" or longer, i need to start forcusing on width. A 36" cats stretched wide will sell higher than a 40+ inch cat stretched narrow.
If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

At my coyote days demo I spend quite a little time explaining width VS length in marketing. Most guys that listen more than pleased with the outcome, but there are some that want to argue because this is the way they've always done it.
It also takes proper stretchers to make things work and show cats off properly!

That is true, 36" is the make or break length generally, after that width starts to become more important than length. Now obviously width and length is ideal, but an 8+" wide 36" cat is going to be better than a 6" wide 40" cat. Presentation is important, fur buyers aren't stupid, but if you clean that cat up nice and make his belly look as wide and long as possible, they are going to be influenced by the presentation. Plus they will know you cared how the finished product came out, which means you probably took better care of it through the whole process and they will be less likely to have to worry about it slipping or tanning up properly. With the prices they are paying for cats, proper presentation can net big benefits.
