I'm looking for some info from you South Carolina guys. I'm retired and live in very northern New York state. My brother lives in South Carolina. The wife and I are talking about spending a month (February) down there in future years. Still trying to convince the wife because she doesn't want to leave the grand kids. While down there I would like to run a small trap line. Not looking to get in anyone's way. Just want to have something to keep me moving. My brother says there are many small hunting clubs that are always looking for people to trap around that time of year because it is after deer and before turkey. Racoon, beaver, otter, bobcat, coyote, etc. What do you guys think? I certainly would be very respectful of their property and rules. Probably 20-25 sets total. not going big at all. Do you think I would find opportunities?

Only one way to find out. Start making some phone calls or better yet knocking on doors. Just like a job interview, have references and maybe even some pictures of your catches. Doesn’t sound like you will have much of a problem but better to be over prepared than under. Good luck.

My brother lives outside of Summerville so we are talking about renting a house on Lake Marion. I believe that is Orangeburg county. We are not completely set on this yet. We could be a little farther west.

Are you just recreational trapping or wanting to make some money for trapping? Keep in mind. Our southern fur isnt near what your used to. Does have some value.
February is a great month to trap. Snakes, gators and turtles are pretty much trouble free.
Also, your best bet is hunting clubs. They won't pay but at times love someone to trap for free. Also, if you go this route. Make sure no rabbit hunting will be done during your trapping. Rabbit guys love to hunt (with dogs) during February. Also, no joy riding from club members.
Also, make sure to to have written permission from landowners or president of club. Will also need to pull a no cost depredation permit from SCDNR regardless if private or hunt club.
Lots of critters here. Take your pick. Just pm and i'll help you anyway I can. Good luck.

Thanks Sarge for the good info. At this point in my life money is not driving me. I just want to help out and have a good time. I appreciate still being around and being able to trap. January and February weather up North here pretty much shuts me down. I go stir crazy. We are just starting Spring beaver right now.I would like to trap a month down South. If I can help some landowners out with predator control that would be great.

. Sarge hit the nail on the head but I will add you need to make a trip in The heart of deer season to make contact with the club members and exchange phone numbers . This is the more likely time you can make contact with members.

Thanks slip knot. That's good information. I'm also joining the South Carolina trappers and hope to make some contacts there.
