Catching large numbers of them takes some traversing of fairly vast areas of wild country in fairly extreme conditions. Last edited by Boco; 03/24/26 12:21 AM. trapped4ever trapper T Joined: Apr 2009 alaska	To the original question from beaverpeeler, both the Eastern and Western Interior of Alaska usually have a fairly high percentage of pale marten in the catch. From what Dirt always says, I guess the Armpit trends that way too.... back when I was trapping 150-160 miles SW of Dirt, we got some pale marten, but always had a fair percentage of the darker ones too....... Like I mentioned to mad mike, I didn't note the premium paid for pales that FHA mentioned in their report, on the batch I had on this sale. It didn't seem to hold true on my grades?

Slick Pan trapper S Joined: Feb 2020 MT	As far as an increase in martin trappers next season I would be surprised to see a lot. It's not like trapping beaver. You need to have the territory/line to do it. Martin are lotted according to color and size. If you want natural undyed skins for jackets etc. You simply buy those lots. Partially dry marten before turning. As far as pales - we are mainly Mrd brown to dark, but pales and even true canaries or orange variations come in occasionally Trapping isn’t a hobby - it’s a lifestyle

rvsask trapper R Joined: May 2019 Saskatchewan	We don't have many marten in our area. I did however pick up a couple this year in fisher sets and they were definitely different in appearance. I know a guy who catches more but he's further north, he gets a wide variation in color.

Not the case a few short years ago when they ended up holding mine for a few years and ended up giving them away. The Auctions always said they were a little on the pale side. rvsask trapper R Joined: May 2019 Saskatchewan	I’m so new to actually actually catching marten I have no idea where the one of mine would even sit in terms of light or dark. The other one I just skinned out to tan as it had some great white feet and a white tip of tail. This one is going to the June sale with the rest of my fisher. Maybe an experienced marten trapper can tell me if it is light or dark. Lol

bearcat2 trapper B Joined: Oct 2011 Idaho	I scrolled back up, and did finally see some front legs peeking out on the left side of the picture. But they were unturned marten rather than mink. I also leave the front legs long on my marten. Most of my marten are probably medium, not too dark and not too light, an orange cast to a lot of them, although I catch a few that have that grayish cast to the underfur. Throat patches can vary from orange to bright yellow to white.
