The evening meal is supper. Lunch and dinner can be used interchangeably, but I usually use lunch. As someone else said for more formal occasions like Christmas or Easter the noon-ish meal is dinner.

Gotta find a way, a better way, I'd better wait

As a kid it was breakfast then dinner at mid-day and supper in the evening. Somewhere along the way I started conforming to the breakfast > lunch > dinner, and at the moment am feeling a bit ashamed about straying from family tradition LOL. I might have to start eating "supper" again to ease my conscience.

Each day is a gift. LIVE IT with gratitude.

That's exactly it. For farmers in the middle of working day, the meal was always dinner. Supper was minor by comparison.

Dinner is at noon. Supper is at night. If I say Dinner for supper then that means fancy supper.

I use them both interchangeably.

My grandparents did the whole dinner then supper thing.

I do feel "supper" is being lost to the generations.

I like to break out some of the vernacular my grandparents used and stump my friends now and then.

"After supper, I think I'll go sit down on the davenport, sort my billfold and have a pop out of the icebox before taking a little jaunt over yonder."

I think it is very fitting that you ask this question on Maundy Thursday.

I guess dinner was historically the main meal of the day. Farmers might still have that meal at lunchtime, but for us city slickers it's usually at night.
