I use mostly #3 chain on everything but has anyone had quality #2 straight link or twisted link fail ever ? Thinking about using it on some mb550 I’m reworking just to have a smaller amount to bed.

I use number 2 on super stake anchors and drags.

That’s not exactly what you are asking but I’ve never had it fail under any circumstances.

Where do you get your twisted link? Would love a reliable source.

Before I moved to Alaska in 2002 all my coyote traps ( around 200) had #2 chain. I never had a failure. I kept a handful of my #3 coils but never got to do any lynx trapping while we were up there. I brought them back with me and put them back to work here in Idaho. And bought a lot more #3 coils and DLS. I equipped them all with new #3 chain but kept the #2 chain on the original traps. They’ve held several coyotes the last two years. I have had a couple #2 chains break when pulling super stakes but just a couple. I have wolves in the area which is why I opted for #3 chain. If it was just coyotes I’d be comfortable with #2 chain.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

About 5 years ago I bought several dozen traps from a retired USDA trapper from back east and last year I bought two dozen #3 Montgomerys, all were set up in the '70s and the 80s. All had number two straight link and/or twist link chain. I have caught quite a few coyotes and also had at least two lions self release from these traps. No problem with the chains. I normally set up new traps with number three chain, but will have no concern using number two in the future.
