Hard to see in the pic but that's all smoke behind fire truck. We had to shut down the highway for a bit. Going to get about 3000 acres burned off today if all goes as planned. Hopefully no more than that.

As one of our local fire chiefs says. Light em' up! Its all going to burn at some point, and whether it starts burning today or in 10 years we don't have enough manpower or equipment to put it out fast whether that is now or 10 years down the road. At least if it gets away today that's a few less cedar choked fields to go really crazy in a few more years. All the idiot city people who are moving to the "countryside" around Topeka hack out a hole in the cedar fields big enough to build their house in. We are going to have ourselves one of the those high society California fires someday soon. Something about honesty, makes it hilarious .

Most folks don’t understand how much just a fifteen or ten mile an hour switch in wind can change dynamics in a second. I always get up tight burning our pasture. And always try and wait for the best conditions cause I do t want to have to make the call… it’s still harrowing but when she comes back green it sure is pretty.. Its a big deal especially when ur dealing with big grass. We had 3 truck mounted sprayers and we just couldn't stop it once it jumped. Not sure how it jumped our back burn. We had checked it 3 or 4 times before we lit the whole thing up. We thought we were done and had loaded up the four wheelers and where gettingreadyto leave. Kind wonder if it was a a little whirlwind that carried it across as there were a few of them happening this morning...???

If they were smart, they would do a lot more proscribed burns in the West, especially in California. When you have plants in the area that are pyrophytes, you should know it's going to eventually burn, because if it didn't, they wouldn't be there.
Keith RX burning in timber is FAR different than in a grass fuel model. Burning grass is a 2 day event at most. Burn one day and patrol the next. Timber can takes weeks. It isn't uncommon for piles burned in the Fall to rekindle and burn in June or July. Both are beneficial but burning in FM 1,2 and 3 is the easy, low hanging fruit.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Keith The first problem with your statement is California. Yes sir I’ve seen fire do funny things, the chief here always says if you’re going to burn grass call him before you light it so he can let people know to kinda be around if you need them, I always thought that was smart so they at least had a heads up.

They burn the national forest around here … see flames 30 yards from back window at times when it jumps the break

…. They burn the national forest around here … see flames 30 yards from back window at times when it jumps the break I spent 5 winters in East Texas around 20 years ago burning. I was stationed in Lufkin (Hudson Helibase) and we would fly each day to the Angelina, Sam Houston, Caddo, Sabine and whatever the other forest was in Texas to do RX burns. Another year I took a Strike Team of engines down there for fires. I have been on fires in West Texas quite a few times too. Those were "fun" fires and far different than the mountain West. My years in Idaho on the Boise and Clearwater NF's were some of the best.

Service? They paid me to ride around in a helicopter and light stuff on fire. If I could have drank beer while doing it, I would have done it for free.

Was flying across northern Kansas the other night right after sundown. What a sight. The checkerboard fires. Yeah some people pay to get a flight so they can see the fires from above at night. Saturday night there was so many fires it was about like dawn here at 10 at night

And this puts a point on why, in the business, we call them "prescribed fires," and not the popular term "controlled burns!" Sometimes they just are NOT controlled!
Pete Lol we just call them burns to leave all options open lol
