Do any of you grow Red Osier Dogwood?

I know it's a very popular plant for wildlife, making hedges, decorative gardens and erosion control.

It grows across the street from me by the telephone poles and the guide wires for the telephone poles. My township chainsaws it down a few times a year, which makes it even bushier. The new growth is red, but not the intense red I see nurseries showing in their ads. Are some varieties better colored than others?

What does it look like in your area?

Do any of you use it for anything?

I've been potting up large amounts of cuttings from it.

I have DWs but no idea their relatives.

In my area it seems to be redder in the late winter and early spring. Most ROD are redder than silky dogwood any time of the year. Both grow well in damp places and both will grow on drier sites, unless the grey dogwoods take over

I have about a dozen bushes growing in my yard that I planted for birds, the plants that are in full sun get much redder bark then those in the shade.

It grows wild all over the place here.Moose love eating it.
It is a very useful plant in the bush and has dozens of uses,large durable baskets for harvesting berrys is made out of red osier dogwood,It is also very useful as cordage.It also has medicinal properties.
Kinnickinnick is made from the green inner bark of the red osier dogwood also.A very pleasant smoke when mixed with a little pipe tobacco.

can have green stems to brown depends on sunshine exposure and spring blistering
the varieties commercially have different berries which when mature are a large song bird forage and marten food 1'st week August

It makes great arrow shafts too.

I like the smell of it.

When moose in my area start browsing in the fall that is the first plant they eat.

I see it every year when I run the river trapping.

I clear sign that winter is coming soon.

We have gobs of it here. Except for forked sticks for bank fishing from shore, as taxidermy mount habitat before I retired, I never used it for much. I am, however, thinking of using a stout fork of it to make myself a small brookie landing net for the jump-over creeks I enjoy fishing.

We plant it around our food plots as a secondary food source for deer.

Here the bark is brightest red in spring darkening thru summer I have lots of it some have berries some do not in late summer

Careful what you wish for, It tends to spread like crazy from root sprouts.

I cut large amounts in the fall and sell bundles for fall-winter scape planters...shows colour very well until the spring blooming willows go in the front door planters.
i consider it the money making shrub @ 20$ bundle in a 6 inch zip tie
