Started off Good Friday on a good note. We went fishing that Thursday evening to pass a little time before we wanted to roost a turkey for Zac the next morning.
Well sometimes things just work out in your favor as 3 gobblers roosted about 200yds from the pond. They gobbled all the way to last light.
They were in the open and the setup was going to be dicey at best. Loggers have been select cutting and a lot of the brush is knocked down in the big pines. That left the small pines. The only issue is we lease out the small pines for pine straw so they’re “clean.” Our only option was the small pines and hope they fly down early and the little bit of cloud cover held to keep us in the dark so to speak. I knew we’d have the elevation in our favor once they hit the deck and everything played out like it was scripted.
This video was just to get some gobbling on camera. Once the first bird flew down it was my time to call. I rarely call to a bird on the limb…I like to hit them the minute their feet hit the deck. Watch the middle of the screen for the first bird to pitch out.
It didn’t take but a couple of calls to get them running our way. I’d put Zac close to the road that runs along the edge of the pines and would’ve had him back farther, but there was a skidder trail just below the road they could’ve taken. I sat back a few rows to draw them up closer incase they wanted to stop short and also I could scare off the hens behind us if they flew down early. You have to look closely to see the birds and they weren’t quite high enough in elevation for me to get “good” video.
So two hunts, and 2 birds and done in less than 20min total, lol.
Saturday we went fishing. CJ has become a fishing fool, it’s all he cares about. He’s on a quest for a new PB bass. He made me buy a scale so he can be accurate, lol. For now, this bass is his personal best…
He and Zac were in a little 2 man bass boat and I got the leaky jon boat with just a small paddle. It proved good enough as the bream are bedding and some kinda fun on a fly rod.
