At least 10 democrat controlled states are trying to create laws taxing up to 10% of people's net worth, if they move out of the state. They are also proposing this tax will apply to people who have left the state up to 10 years before the laws go into effect. This seems unconstitutional. Any thoughts?

New Jersey has had an "exit" tax for a long time. I don't know the specifics of it but especially you pay a fee to the state when you sell your house that you get back when you buy your new house.

You can get around it by moving into an apartment before leaving the state.

In my opinion it's the same as stealing from you, one should not be forced where to live in our country, many people move all the time till the find a place they like, and they don't get charged for doing so.

Charging a cost for leaving a state you no longer care to live in is government supported theft !!

So if you put your wealth into a trust you're going to need to pay 10% also? My wife and I have thought about becoming south dakotans, it's just not affordable at this time.

The whole concept suggests those in charge (the Lords) must see the residents of the state as some form of fief or serf.........they own you and your property and you owe allegiance to the state?

I cannot see that flying in context US Constitution, Bill of Rights and taking of property, for no other reason than they think they can. Falling down funny as these are same folks who been running those "No Kings" events. Clue to the left.......this is not Game of Thrones.......and you don't own us.

I was going to comment that Jersey has had a form of exit tax for a long time. It was created when state officials realized there was a mass exodus of people fleeing the liberal policies and high taxes.

Eh...wot?

Keith

This is NOT an exit tax, but it is causing high income earners to exit Washington. It irks me when folks write this misleading nonsense, especially when a simple reading reveales the truth.

It is an income tax not an exit tax.

This is completely unconstitutional; the Constitution clearly states that you cannot make a retroactive law that subjects people to any penalty on an act committed before the law was put into effect. Honestly, this just goes to show that Democrats are desperate. There are so many people leaving their states that they have to try to control them... you don't see millions of people leaving Texas, Ohio, or Louisiana, just saying...

Next be building walls to keep everyone from escaping. Idiot's keep voting for communist so communist law's is what they get, more power to them. In time state's are going to have to break up from the union if they wish to survive in an American type system. Doubt that happens, whole country will dissolve over the next 100 years, we became too stupid to survive.
