Did you try H4895 reduced load? I have not. Do have some 90grainers here tho. Think those are NLA.

Check out these lil humdinggers…… ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/04/full-56418-290806-image.jpg) I fooled around with these about 25 years ago. My old custom Mauser didn’t like them. Just a thought……. Those being set up for 6.5, is the “ogive” different than the old style .277? I’m not a big Creedmore guy, but isn’t their throat longer to be more friendly to long heavy bullets? On the other hand, I would think that these being 115 you’d be fine. When trapping, over thinking a set can be harmful. When reloading, it never hurts to explore every aspect you can think of……lol

What does she hunt? Even at the 2800 FPS, with that bullet, will be nearly explosive on impact.

You can go even lighter with the 270. Like down to 90 grain bullets. I had some Hodgens Superformance powder to try in a different cartridge and it didn't give very good accuracy in that load so I tried it in the 270. Got good accuracy and the velocity was really fast. Don't know how it would work with the light bullets as I was shooting 129 gr bullets with that powder. Superformance will definitely add some velocity but it doesn't lend itself to accuracy every time. I really like the 270. Ive shot ours out to about 750 with pretty good accuracy for a simple hunting rifle. Superformace has been making me cuss so much in .22 creed I swear I thought blc 2 and h414 where bad

I think how far. Shooting in the open or in cover will require different bullets. Hunting or target shooting also require bullets to be designed in different areas. I know I have shot many animals with the 270 and 130 and 140 grain bullets. I tried a lighter bullet and shot only one deer with it to see great meat destruction. I would never do that again unless you are just wanting to kill and not eat the meat. If I had to use the lighter bullets I would shoot them in the head. Just my 2 cents. Load for a few guys who like ...and explosive effect . Know one guy said he wanted something that would go in blow up like a grenade and not exist well .... Apparently a 50gr vmax goin about 2900 drops deer like a sack a friggen bricks if you pop em in the adams apple .. apparently just do a lil whistle and theyll look right at you and pop. No risk to the surrounding cattle either . Idk I thought he wanted a varmit round till he told me a few months later ...still never sent me any pictures of the results

My boy shot a big buck a year and a half ago in the Adam's apple with the 270 with a pretty fragile hunting bullet, berger hybrid hunter 140 grain i believe. It didn't drop in his tracks . I just kind of looked stunned. He quickly put a second round in its heart. Made me worry a little bit about what would have happened if he hadn't shot it a second time. But a 250 deer is different than a hundred pound deer.
And yes I really am not a fan of the Superformance powder other than, and luckily, in the 270. The 3 other cartridges I've tried it in sucked. Same with staball 6.5, just not as bad.

So shooting a deer through the RIBS to take out the lungs ruins so much meat it’s not worth salvaging? You guys crack me up. An explosive effect that area won’t even have an exit wound. Not much meat on the ribs anyway. Inside will look like jello but not alot of “ meat “ damage. You can buy low recoil 270 shells

You can buy low recoil 270 shells I know you weren't directing that comment to me and I do agree with you that you can limit a lot of meat damage by just shooting them in the ribs but when hunting deer and more specifically mature bucks I like to have more options on the shots I can effectively take.

So went ahead and did a lil looky loo just to see how bad the hang out / jump would be with this smaller bullet and ..well it's honestly not hay bad Was expecting most of the bullet to be hanging out ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/04/full-34110-290809-920.jpg) And honestly it's about the same as the 130 SST ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/04/full-34110-290810-923.jpg) And just out of curiosity I lines them up with a old 130 speed grand slam I got a box of So from left to right it's the 130 grand slam , 130 SST ,115 PPU BTHP ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/04/full-34110-290811-927.jpg)

In the early 70's ,I used to reload my 270 rounds. I seem to remember loading 90 grain for woodchuck, and varmints, 130 for deer. Dreamed of loading 150 for elk, moose. Was loading both to get a load that would hit the bulls eye at 250-300 yards in each load. + - 3 inches. Not sure anymore. Went through divorce , and lost everything. Lost my job, and thought I could store my stuff at my dad's barn. LOL EVERYTHING JUST VANISHED. So what someone didn't take, my dad burned, because it wasn't his. Was working wherever I could, and as much as I could, so didn't get out there for a long time. I never tried reloading again. Guess I still have an attitude.
