Coondagger: those banks wouldn't stop a coon around here if they wanted to get to that pocket. At my age they would prohibit me though from going down the bank. Lol ( be 77 next season) I've had coon swim to sets and also hang off roots to reach down to pockets. I don't doubt for a second that Beav could traverse those banks though. Lol Yes same here. Drag way too many coon out of steep banks. Here in the Midwest mink trapping means coon in most situations. I'm with you guys - I looked at those pictures and thought that looks like a great place to catch coon!

Anyone know how the Next Gen Trapper of Iowa did this year? Someone said he had health problems. He was a big numbers trapper. I noticed that he stopped posting videos. He broke 3,000 coon a year ago, but I don't know how he made out this year.

An old neighbor of mine used to tell me about having caught 250 red fox one year as incidentals on his mink line in the 1950's.

I know from his face book posts this year he hit it hard. i believe he had over 300 mink and a boat load off coon. he didn't run any DP's he stayed in the water this year.

Yellowbelly, something to think about. If you are trapping crawfish ponds, all the traditional mink methods can be thrown out the window.
If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I'm not much of a mink trapper, but what BP said about red fox, I did catch one in a pocket set, shallow stream area, steep bank backer. Fox must have crossed the stream to get to the pocket. Muskrat for bait.
All this info is great. Roy Chambers ran a dry land line for mink using dirtholes near ditches and sloughs. Of course I was only 8-9 years old but I loved hearing all his trapline stories.

I’m not a high numbers mink guy,, lots of guys run circles around me. But my favorite set. Up For mink isn’t my own idea.. tom Krause has a set called “ The boogie mink set” It’s pretty simple and yup it’ll catch mink. Find a stretch of vertical bank that might be similar to the wall of a concrete bridge…take a wrist sized log and prop it up against the wall and the other end into the water. Place your trap under the water and under the log.
Mr mink is going to be blasting his way down along the creek edge and that log is going to slow him down and funnel him right into trap.
Another one I came up with works well for frozen creek and high water. Dig a hole Underneath the water level ( make a fake muskrat den hole). And put a body grip in front. Put a shiny spoon from a lure back into the hole. When the creek freezes over,,, this will be operational still… and when the creek gets high,,, it’s still going to work. When a creek floods,,, most of the debris stays on the top of the water…and way down towards the bottom. It doesn’t change a whole bunch, unless it’s a very sandy creek.
I learned this by pure observation. I noticed that I was catching a lot of mink in my body grips inside of muskrat dens.. they investigate them more than we realize. Looking for muskrat at home or frogs or crawdads… even bullheads. You will catch lots of muskrat using it too

Good info. But digging holes under water is a real chore. You're better off digging a trench and then putting something over it then cover it up. You could even keep the high end of the trench open. That way you can catch those mink that are running the bank. That black flexible drain tile makes great tunnel material.

Yellowbelly, something to think about. If you are trapping crawfish ponds, all the traditional mink methods can be thrown out the window. I don't have a mink around. Be that as it may, I have still been enjoying this thread, and feel that it is definite archive material. So, in the spirit of this thread ending up in the archives.....Airport, why don't you post some advice about trapping mink in southern crawfish ponds?
Gotta find a way, a better way, I'd better wait
