It got higher than it is now under Biden. But I suspect your selective with your memory with the TDS and all. Personally I dont pay much attention I have to buy it regardless. But not long ago a feed on My wife fb memories popped up where she had posted about how high gasses was 5 or 6 years ago with picture of price at the pump. It was .50 higher.

Yes, it was higher under Biden. Not sure why anyone would be surprised about gas spiking during a war, even if it wasn't for the Hormuz deal. I expect gas prices to be elevated for some time, even if the Strait remains open.
