It's definitely an art, Missouri/Iowa has the best black walnut available, but I've used black cherry, butternut, zebra wood, bird's eye maple and a few others it's best if you can get it and let it air dry, I've used kiln dried as well. It takes lot's of hand/shoulder strength. It's always a thrill when you get them finished and you put the paddle and box together and hear the turkey jump out of it.

Fantastic work, Nate. If you ever want to sell one, I'd be interested.

Beautiful call. Bet it sounds as nice as it looks.

Great looking calls, Nate, Do they usually come out sounding pretty good? Ever built any that just sound off, no matter what you do? Just curious.

Looks good. Did you see the Missouri Conservationist article this month about box calls from the Eminence area?

They sometimes do and sometimes don't, sometimes you have to try a few different pairs to find the right pair some never make it.

I haven't looked yet, but I have a few calls from there, some are from ole timers that have passed. They were a big help when I first started building calls.

I've used hedge, but feel like there's better choices.

The paddle/ striker is rounded, you want it to strike near the center of the paddle.
