![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/04/full-3746-291268-2025_11_03_muskrat_huts_2.jpeg) I'm looking for advice on options for staking foothold traps around deep water muskrat huts and also for advice on stabilizing, especially on windy days, while setting footholdtraps. As per the attached photo, most of the huts are in 4-5 ft of water with 1-2 ft of muck bottom so I used 8 ft long willow stakes and never got out of my canoe. Those crooked stakes didn't stack very well so I'm looking for a better option. I'm in Minnesota and don't have access to bamboo, so I'm thinking either fiberglass stakes or 3/4"x3/4"x8' hardwood stakes. Do you have any advice on whether either of these options or another option would likely work best for deep water muskrat trapping with stoploss traps? Also, do you have any advice on staking the canoe in place next to a hut for this type of trapping, especially on windy days? Willow stakes run through rope loops tied to the canoe's yoke were slow and awkward. Thank you.

Willow stakes have worked for me, might have to make several trips. I have two anchors on my canoe, one in the front and one in the back. I have a pulley and rope system for the front one. A small boat would be more stable.

Have you considered weights instead of stakes? Just the weight of the trap will drown a rat. I used willow stakes in small lake one time not realizing there were beaver there too. Bad idea. Very bad.

I just "punch" the huts with my fist, it makes a pocket set essentially, put a foothold or ideally a stoploss and stake with the step in fence post. I've not done this put I would look into the canoe stabilizers that extend out, if you put one on one side you should be able to just work off that side.

I always used 1X2 pine. A bit bulky and they get mowed off by beavers on occasion, but they work good. A good memory and a hook will get most of your equipment back if they get chewed off. I've taken thousands of rats, trapping marshes like the one in your pic.

Thanks for everyone's advice so far. I think that stabilize isn't the corect term for my canoe. I'm looking for a more efficient option to keep my canoe from blowing away when I pull up to a hut to make a set or remove a muskrat and reset the trap. Also, I've always used dried willow stakes and haven't had any issues with beaver cuting them after several thousand trap nights. Try a skiff like a carstens pintail. They have lower sides and do better in the wind. Or you can wait till it freezes and work them through the ice.

We used to have rats like that----boy that looks nice. We used cut hemlock and tied heavy cord to our trap so it was easy to tie them on......jk

An anchor for the canoe. just a small one should work. And like mentioned above, I would just stake the trap to the hut and let the trap and rat swim off the hut and drown. Another option I used the last 2 years on a marsh very similar to yours is I tied up a bunch of softball-size rocks with bailing wire, then wired them to a shot of the same wire about 6' long. The little #1 Duke coils i have come with a drowner on the end of the chain, rather than a ring, so I just slip the end of the wire through that. When I make a set on the edge of the hut, I pound a flat spot just at the edge of the hut so the trap is about 2"-3" under the surface, drive a small stake or stick into the hut just above the water, wrap the trap end of the wire around that and toss the rock into the water making sure the wire is straight. Then set the trap. It took me longer to type this than it does to make that set.
Just doing what I want now.

use the 4 foot fiberglass stakes with enough wire or chain and stake right through the hut. This and I used to wire a railroad spike to the bottom of a #1 long spring for added weight to drown the rat.
