I’ve got a homemade one of them fortresses out right now. There’s a reason was free, way more bang for the buck running floats. Good spots for those are where one creek flows into another. The fella who gave it to me is a pretty organized, high volume trapper and these just take up too much room in the truck and slow to set up. Johnnys efficient, no wasted movement or time when he sets out…..lol
I’m moving it a bit further up stream and going to leave it there all year high and dry. Even with bait & food removed, the bear might still twist it up like a Rubix-cube.
I should’ve got buddy take a vid of me setting it up, would’ve been a good blooper reel……lol

Thanks everyone for replies guess a little clarification and reasoning is needed.
WA prohibits use of body gripping traps so 110's and #1 DC are out for making floats, yes have and use submersible colony traps just looking at adding to the legal arsenal

Seems like the door is wrong. The critter has to climb on to the door and push it down to get in. I can see if that door was attached like a regular colony trap it might work better.

I guess I would like to see even a simpler design. Like no cage on top. Just a wood platform to climb on and a dropdown door in the middle would probably work just as good and not as bulky.

The top cage holds the bait and traps them. Eventually they'll go into the hole and drown.
Maybe you could omit the top cage and ross some carrots into the bottom cage to entice them in?
They are really bulky and a bit flimsy, that's for sure.....lol

Never ever used bait in mine.Made mine out of chicken wire 16x24 platform.
Used them in the spring with a little rat castor,
Rats always looking for a float to scent mark in the spring never used them in the fall.No need for any bait.
Set mine in small and medium sized creeks not marshes.
Check every 3 or 4 days as long as water stays cold.
