Tough call. You want to remove the paint but not the patina underneath. Taking it down to bare metal might mean sacrificing some of the value.

You could send snakecollector a PM and get his opinion.

I am very naive when it comes to removing paint but how do you control how far down you go? Seems to me that once you start using strong chemicals, you lose control. Maybe not??

Sandblasting would remove the paint, but would also remove the patina.

You know you're old when you walk past a rest room and think, as long as I'm here........

might try a heat gun, worked slowly enough should soften the paint enough to be able to get it off a metal surface.

I don’t know if a 50/50 vinegar water would ruin the patina. It would most certainly remove the paint though. Just leave it in there for about a week or two… that’s how long I soak to remove paint…
I just go to the car wash and spray it off…

That would definitely take it down to bare metal which is what he is trying to avoid,
