Im getting close to locking in on a Volquartsen 17hmr semi auto for coyote hunting behind hounds. Most are taken with shotgun, but when hunting the farm ground, many succumb to the 17 running across the open ground. Been using the Savage A17, but saying its not a reliable autoloader is an understatement. There are five in our group that have the A17s, and nobody is happy with them. Not enough time in the day to discuss the issues and attempted solutions...
Volquartsen makes several 17hmr semis, and they are certainly proud of them based on their price. However, ill gladly buy once and cry once if it means getting a reliable autoloader. Nothing cooks my goose more than having a ftf or fte when sighting down on a running coyote...you dont have time for second chances.

Anyone on here have some time and experience with one of their 17hmr semis...?

No experience with the Volquartsen, but I've got a Magnum Research autoloader in 22 magnum that has been supremely reliable. They also made it in 17 HMR, I believe. Personally I would prefer the 22 mag for coyotes, but if 17 is what you want, I'm pretty sure they made one.

17 HMR and its parent case, 22 mag are well known for not functioning reliably in a lot of autoloaders. So you are smart to do your research. I have a Remington that hasn't been taken out in years, if you loaded the clip, put it in the gun, and shot it within a few minutes, it would function. If you loaded the clip and waited overnight, or even a few hours, it would jam, tried multiple clips with the same results.

I don't own one of their rifles, but know 5 or 6 guys that do. Have never heard a bad word about Volguartsen.

Valquartsen does not like to make questionable stuff , you pay for it but it tends to work the way they intend.

I have not shot any of their 17 stuff

I have some triggers for 10/22s and I have shot some Valquartzen MK2 clones in 22lr

you have to pay for it but they do have a reputation of quality.

if any 17hmr semi auto is going to cycle reliably it is probably A Valquartzen

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have shot a Volquartzen .22LR for years. Unbelievably accurate and dependable

I had previously checked into Magnum Research, but they dont appear to make an autoloader in 17 or 22 mag any longer. They look like a fine company.

I see where Bear Creek Armory makes a 17hmr semi auto.....but I am less than thrilled with their overall reputation. I found two specific reviews on the BC-203, one was positive, the other was negative. I wont be their third guinea pig.

Thanks for all the responses...I think a Volquartsen is my only option with any certainty of reliability.

There’s a lot better coyote calibers out there for coyotes than a 17hmr

Almost every one,,,

Not for what we do and with our state regulations.

I have the savage A17 in WSM and have been pleased with it. More energy and velocity than the HMR. No experience with the Volquartsen.

Franklin Armory also makes a .17 wsm upper for the AR platform. I have heard a lot of good about them but they are pretty pricey.
