Hello,

I very new to this part but I would like to get a bunch of hides tanned, lets say raccoon and beaver. If I flesh them and dry them on a board do I bring them flat to the tannery? I thought I read somewhere where it said to roll them up is that even possible? Any guidance would help. Pretty much the scenerio is to trap the coon rough skin, freeze---------- then flesh and board all in a short amount of time and bring to the tanary thanks for the help have a good day

I would contact the tannery. Most of them will have instructions on how THEY want the pelts.

The rolling up would just be for ease of shipping. If you're taking them to a tannery no need to roll them up.

Rolling them is only for saving on shipping cost with a box, they still have to be properly fleshed and dried for a tannery

which we all know who deal with them that after drying one is not going to get any kind of roll out of them to save much on boxing, and one never sends a pelt out in any kind of wet or moist condition, that would just be like throwing it away !!

Open pelts like beaver would be one where rolling might save you in a pinch if you have a large box, but then you get his with a size of box handling fee !

I always completely flesh clean all matter from the animal, then stretch and dry properly, I will find boxes that are long and
at least the width of the fur to be shipped, some fur's like the long long ones you can get away with a single mid bend on them
for shipping, smaller ones just stack on top of each other until the box is full. I have taken large boxes apart and rebuilt them for shipping as well !

Moyles has a great site for proper shipping and the instruction's can be used for most all tanneries !

As a side note, I always label my fur with a sharp pin punch at the base of the tail on the inside after they are dry, but you can also use a colored zip tie and note it on your instruction's of kind of tanning, does not take much just your initials is enough

Moyles always color codes the fur with a tag any way and writes it down on your order, but sometimes things happen, ever since I started coding my own I have never have lost another fur !

Do you have a tannery in mind? I am about to send another order to Sleepy Creek Tannery in Iowa. I've used them a bunch in the past and always been happy with price, service and turnaround time. Another benefit is ypu can ship to them dirt cheap with SpeeDee and as long as you ship Monday through Wednesday, they'll have it in 1 or 2 days tops. I don't think SpeeDee dings you for a large box, just priced based on weight.

Don't forget in Wisconsin when shipping furs the box needs to be labeled with your license number and type/quantity of furs.
