Each sect has different rules. For solar they limt the size of inverter to limit them. Phone are for business and dont go in the house.

I wish the local small engine shop sold sthil instead of huskies. Seems I just prefer sthil over the huskies I have used. Maybe its just becuse its waht I started with and am used to.

Some of the Amish that I have gotten close to say that Being totally self suffcient is against there ways. They have a belief that they need to be supportive of each other. so thier rules tend to lend themselves to the fact that they ask for help and be supportive to others. After being around them for a while you begin to under stand that you don't under stand.

I never really give it much thought on how the Amish choose to live. I never got the feeling they are judging me so it works out well. I ran with kids that went to Public school, Catholic school and Christian school. We were all a bit different in traditions I guess. We just went with it !

I don’t see anything wrong with a Church/Community setting their own parameters. I have Schartzentruber Amish locally. They don’t even allow inflated tires. Demanded the electric transformer was removed from their yard. I could chase them across a forty threatening to take their picture with my cell phone. The kids don’t go on run around. Kerosene lamps in the house.

I have a close Amish friend that has a remote control Bobcat. Enter his shop and he starts a Generator that could power a mobile home park. He has a man cave that be the envy of anyone here. The Farm/Ranch phone ( cell) is available for the business but I will admit it may be used for a few personal calls from time to time . When the kids are on run around many are driving leased 60K trucks and bringing in $2300 a week working factory jobs.

Only thing they have in common is they’re both happy. And Amish !

I worked with several New Order Amish in our area when I taught Farm Business at our tech college. All were dairy farmers with the power lines going to the barn so they could milk cows, cool milk and run silo unloaders, barn cleaners etc. All had a stables for work horses as well as skid steers etc. No electric to the house. Cell phones were kept in the milk house where they could charge them up. Most milked 40-50 cows, two milked over 70 plus. They utilized FSA Farm Service Agency loans and that is how I got to work with them. They also had loans with banks as well as individuals. One of the farmers who sold his farm to one of the families served as the main driver (taxi) for most of the families.They had a school in the attic of one of the homes and hired a younger single Amish lady to teach.

I saw an un believable setup several years ago. There was an Amish family who owned a huge carpentry and cabinet shop and business. They hired drivers to get them to the sites. They remodeled my brother' place. We stopped in at the main shop. Tlhere was a huge shed probably 120-160 feet long and 40 wide. There were two huge generators at one end that ran lights and two long shafts that ran most of the way down the shop. Attached to those shafts were belts than ran the most up to date, sophisticated cabinet equipment, lathes etc. that I had ever seen. I don't recall exactly how many crews were sent out but I saw over a dozen just working in the shop when I was there.
