First time I am going to try tanning deer hides. Here's my dilemma. I had both hands get carpal tunnel surgery, along with elbows. I was called this past Saturday morning and was told that our half a beef was ready for pickup. Running low on freezer space so I pulled my deer hides out, thawed them and covered them with salt. It's to early for me to flesh them, it was hard enough to flesh what i caught before the surgery. My question is will it cause any issues with just salting them now and flesh later?

The guy I know doesn't scrape his deer hides. They just salt them and whoever buys them salted.

Can't sell a hide or any other part of a game animal in NC. Sad that we waste so many hides.

Salting is fine. Best to have them angled slightly to drain. Salt, then shake off after a few days. Resalt.

Fleshing them later will be a bit tougher, but will work fine.

Definitely not ideal to salt unfleshed hides. Are there large chunks of meat and fat on the skins?

I would say expect some slippage.

I would have bought another chest freezer for the beef.

Fine for leather. Risky for hair on.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

First off thanks for the replies. If there's a chance for slippage I might just have to try my hand at making buckskin. I cleaned large chunks of fat and meat off of it. I have the deer, plus a couple of coyotes, coons and muskrats to try. Skinned a few of the rats like you would skin beavers. Going to try alum tanning and mount them to small hoops like beavers.
