The Novaks of Sheridan County, Wyoming were in the sheep camp at 10 PM on December 31, 1948. Blizzard of ’49 started. Czech-American. Dad, Mom, Babička, 3 kids — 8, 11, 14. 1,000 sheep. Wagon was 8x14. Snow 4 feet in 2 hours. -30°F. Sheep piled on the wagon. Would crush it. Kill them. Dad cut the canvas. Let 30 sheep in. Packed them. Then he got out. With the axe. Chopped a trench. In the snow. Around the wagon. 3 feet deep. Made a moat. Sheep fell in. Couldn’t pile. Mom and kids got inside. With 30 sheep. Babička, 78, sang. Kept them calm. From 10 PM to 8 AM. 10 hours. Dad stayed out. In the trench. Kept it open. Frostbite took 3 toes. At 8 AM it stopped. Wagon stood. 1,000 sheep lived. 970 outside, 30 in. Babička said “Sheep were the walls.”

30 below, even in Alaska, doesn't come with snow. Clear and cold. I think this story is as exaggerated as Bruces'.

Nah, sheep attacking a wagon in a blizzard happens all the time.

Those 1000 sheep followed those kids to school... uphill both ways..... tunneling through 4' of snow all the way.

What did you think happened?

Gotta find a way, a better way, I'd better wait

I wonder why they were off to a remote sheep camp in December? Cattleman graze the more remote altitudes in the summer and drive them back to HQ or closer to it during the winter.

Come on Lefty! Don't tell me you have never tried the old "ran out of gas trick" on a date. 1,000 sheep in a wagon with no where to run? That is the things dreams are made of in Boco land.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Not believing it, ttzt. 30 inches of snow you can measure. Who was measuring wind speed? I might believe 30 below wind chil in a bad storm, but again, who was measuring? Doesn't matter what state you're in, extreme cold comes with clear skies allowing heat to rise into the atmosphere. In Wyoming, 30 below is extreme.

Sorry if you don't believe it, this storm is well documented.
