WA used to be sold as a commercial lic. Got a phone call that “they” referred to it as recreational.
I do t know if it matters, except for tax deduction. It is harder to right off rec. activitys.

Recreational. I try hard to cover my costs. I fill out a schedule C for tax purposes.

WA trappers license is still commercial. DFW people are notorious for getting the law wrong. All WA recreational licenses were raised this year. Trapping license did not go up. Thanks hump. I corrected the person on the phone, but they kept referring to it as recreational.

Words mean things. In the public relations battle words are chosen carefully and come with pros and cons. I'm always on guard for just how politicians, the media and activist groups word things.
Commercial is easier to defend as an economic activity. However, commercial take of a public resource raises questions.
Recreational is fun and also something people spend money to do. However, it is not a primary income source to the participant and could be even considered a nonessential frivolous activity.
See what I mean?
JMO, but our outdoor activities trapping/hunting/fishing should never been portraying as frivolous or nonessential. I tend to agree with your logic BUT (refer to the portion in Bold) Commercial fishermen make their living off a public resource for the most part. Exceptions being the ones running fish farms. And in NC, there is no designation as to trapping licenses being recreational or commercial. You can even trap for compensation during the trapping season. But you can not trap for compensation of any kind outside the trapping season without a Wildlife Control Agent or Technician License.

When we are asked to report our beaver harvest numbers in Oregon we are asked if it was recreational, damage control, or other. I always state "other" since they do not provide commercial" as an option. I'm a fur trapper and I do it for money, not recreation.
