So, had a guy call a few days ago and asked if I could help him get an oil filter of of a Toro zero turn mower. When I got there he already had a couple guys over to try. The filter was crushed almost flat and half ways tore from them threaded end that attaches to the motor. So, in the process to help him the threaded part from the lower unit broke off where the filter screw into. Wouldn't you know it!!!

So, he is a guy that can barely live from month to month on his SSI check and not in good health. I help him on things through out the years.

My question is do you feel it is your obligation to pay for the parts and having this job done to replace the bottom unit on twin motor for all expenses??

He went down and had the part ordered and price of parts was ~250$. I went to the place he ordered it from and gave them 100$ for credit for the parts he ordered. The fix will be expensive and even though I want to help more what would you do in this case?

Thanks Donnersurvivor for your honest response. I might go and give him another 50$ of credit I just feel terrible about it. He did say he doesn't blame me and not my fault but still I feel for him also.

I don't think you're obligated - the real damage was done before you got involved. You could just walk away, but the fact that you didn't says a lot about your character. Good on you for helping a friend out. Your $150 should be a huge help.

I would help him out and pay for the expense if you have the means personally. Since he is already down and out. Just how I would roll.

Why stop helping part way. If you can finish the job. Can’t take it with you!

Thanks a lot for the views all of you had. I will see how things go and the total cost for him to get it back in service.

That was nice of you, Snowy. How does he feel about it? Does he realize that the guys before you did damage? Hopefully, he appreciates what you did.
