I got this call today and I'm a bit skeptical what if anything can be done. What type of exclusion material do y'all use to keep the slithering varmints outside?

Thanks

It doesn't take much to keep a snake out, so it comes down to what condition the garage is in. Flashing, foam or caulk. Snakes don't chew, but mice do, so keep that in mind. The usual issue is the overhead door if you have one. Make sure the bottom rubber sits tight to the ground. If the ground or the door is uneven it's going to be tough. If it's an old garage on a stone foundation, bulldoze it and build a new one.

A typical issue of entry with many snakes in a garage comes from the bottom of the door(s) and the door bottom corner edges. Snake work can be very challenging to those just starting out. The smaller non climbers can make entry through a very small hole configuration.

I would make sure the garage door is totally sealed first. Then you have to catch the occupants that are now on the interior. If the garage is attached to the home you may have to determine if there is access to the attic of the residence. Now you have a different set of circumstances.

Then go about trapping them out by setting up along the interior walls and any over head travel points. Black rat snakes can be the main target species ( climbers ) , next are the garter and ring neck snakes. At least that is our primary species in our state and area.

Those are just the structure itself.

What is immediately adjacent to the door?

Pine straw mulch, as is common down here?

Perfect habitat for Brown, Red Belly, Ringneck and other small fossorials.

Shrubbery untrimmed?

Trash cans right next to the building?

Concrete or asphalt drive?

Flower bed edging or retaining wall?

Sometimes the site is just prime real estate and the garage is just a cool spot next to a warm spot and fits in with the whole snake lifestyle.
