Not to bad for the shape I'm in really. Took some good paying gigs down here on the 3rd coast so Port A and Padre Island for the next couple days.

Hard to complain really.

Hope your wife turns it around quick no fun being sick.

I've read about it, never done it. Wish you had one of them washing machine rubber door stopper pluckers or did you skin them? Did you pressure cook or just water bath? So many people poo poo on the just the water bath just depends which method you are following I guess. That crazy farmer guy has quite the cleaning operation. Maybe you haven't seen it. I will try to find a link.

This seemed like the setup.

yup I built a barrel type , my scalder was manual , you put your most skilled person on that scalder , if the scald is right everything else is right.

That sounds just great, cotton. I only raised and butchered meats one time, but we never canned them.

When we were kids on the farm,my dad would buy 500 peeps. we would raise them 6-8 weeks and then
head chopping time. My mother worked in a factory and would bring home orders for cut up chickens.
Some people would order 10-15 some more some less.
If i never have to pluck another chicken,i'd be alright with it!!

Way to go cotton! Angie and I raised meat chickens once, we froze them whole for the smoker.

As a family of 4 when I was a kid we got a gross (12 dozen) cornish rock hybrids each spring. Do the math that is a lot of chickens for supper. We always tried to butcher at least a doz at a time and i was the scalder little brother was the plucker. He was scared of getting burned.

Anyway a dozen of those big suckers would screw up a whole day by the time they was in the freezer. Its work

We butchered the Cornish rock also had to put something in there water to help there legs to be strong enough to hold them up they grew pretty fast that was back in the 80's.used to sell alot to a local grocery store the older people liked them around Thanksgiving and Christmas for roasters they would be pretty big by that time of year.wouldnt get away with doing that nowadays with all the red tape.

We just let em run free range and never had but one or 2 with leg problems over the years.
Of course maybe our hyprids was slighly different than some. Ours came straight out of the Stromburg catalogs

put the water about 6 feet away from the feed , and increase it a little as they get older to around 10 so that they walk back and forth

make sure the litter if you use shavings is the larger shavings and not dust or fine shavings , 2 reasons , larger shavings interlock and don't slip like saw dust does.
second , fine dust causes respiratory issues. they will likely live ok past the 8 weeks but if they are fighting a respiratory issue they won't put on the weight like you want.

also raise the food and water up a little and make them reach for it , it makes them stand and not lay in front of the feeder.

enough exercise to strengthen the legs , not enough to burn many calories.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
