it isn't a notch at all it is a V at no point was a notch cut.

if you can't explain an open face cut vs a undercut sometimes called a Humboldt and what each is used for a hinge and holding wood , use the phone to call someone who knows that and other types of notch as well and what they are used for.

Unknowing home owner or one just trying to save money?

I have been called back after I was told I was to expensive to fix similar mess. Sadly the worse one was my aunt. Business lady very successful and book smart. Tried to go cheap on a very large oak over one of her business. Told me I was to expensive went with the cheapest guy. Called me back like it was an emergency when the huge old tree was inside her business. It was not an emergency to me.

I went buy to see it took some pics could not stop laughing. She didnt see why I thought it was funny. It took a while for it to register when she asked how long it would take to get the tree off .and out of the building so she could get it fixed. I told her she didn't have enough money to afford me got in the truck and left.

If it was someone trying to save money I will just say that's what they get. If it was just an uninformed home owner I feel sorry they got taken for a ride. At.least they got a free rope wink and now its an insurance job so only the deductible will be their out of pocket expense.

Sure is a mess.

For added context. I bid this tree at $950, it's at a near million dollar cabin. Two guys and 2 ladies showed up to do this tree, the rope is something you'd get for .10 cents a foot at a hardware store, they had it about 8 feet up the tree. The ladies were pulling the rope and the guy was cutting. Customer heard a loud bang and lots of screaming, when they went out to see what happened everyone was getting in the truck to leave.

Though it doesn't look that tough to get that tree gone it was actually extremely difficult, the hill it's on is to steep to drive a bobcat up. We charged $7,500 to safely get that off the house with no additional damage

did you chain/strap the base to the stump crib and jack the tree off the house , then cut all the limbs down to the cribbing in small lengths then pull the trunk away from the house?

I am curios your process if you get time to explain.

Used a lift to remove all the weight that we safely could. We used an articulating loader to come up the hill and lift the tree off the stump and set it back on the ground. I had to go buy a $6,000 teleboom for the bobcat and we used that to remove just enough weight to be able to cut the tree away from the house. We used a rope to attach the teleboom to the tree and had a friction device on the tail end in case anything went wrong we could just drop the tree instead of flipping the loader down the hill.

Wow!! It cost the owner big time for trying to save a dime. How much damage to the house was there?

Very Minimal, couple shingles and some facia. Getting it off without causing additional damage was the tricky part.

I've gone my entire life without needing a teleboom, funny how I keep finding projects I want it for now that I have it. Tomorrow we will be fishing a tree outta the lake with it

I know a guy that cut about 50 trees with the bottom instead of the v he cut one side down then came in the top a cut down so it all was on the slant no notch at all and he never got killed always amazed me how lucky so people are at cutting trees.

And just like that, The "Minneapolis Humbolt" cut was born.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I think we can call that the Minneapolis cut , it's not right , it don't make no sense it tries to pretend they can make up physics to do what they want it to because 51% of the people present decided it was so.

My neighbor takes trees down via the "MN notch". I showed him how to properly cut a tree, but I guess he failed physics in school and can't see why his notch won't hold a tree. Pure dumb.

I'm a little amazed that the saw wasn't still stuck in that cut (I use the term cut loosely).

That is the first thing I thought too

Cutting trees is the most dangerous thing an inexperienced person can do.

A few years ago I did elementary school presentations to a few local schools about our job and safety. Some hot teacher always asks what’s the most dangerous thing we do.
“The most dangerous thing a lineman will do is driving to the job, or running a chainsaw.”
It’s a lot safer doing HV work than LV with all the handcuffing safety procedures. There’s always some jobs that just can’t be done by following procedures, then the utility turns a blind eye and if something happens, it’s on the employee for failing to follow procedure…..lol. Their butts covered.
The tree/chainsaw module these guys/gals read in trade school, then the 6 hour practical course isn’t enough for someone that’s never ran a saw. I’ve seen certified UTT arborists that shouldn’t be dropping trees either. Some should stick to limbing……lol

That would have worked fine if there wasn't a house in the way. Idiots. Their saw should be confiscated.
