Kidding that has been beat to death. Everyone knows where they stand and what works for them. Myself I will buy low mileage used, pay the matanance and drive them tell they go to the scrap yard. Over time it saves me a ton.
And I just did that again. Picked up an 04 f150 4x4 with 4.6 with 81k miles. Paid 6500. More than I wanted by about 800 since it does have some rust but. 1 I was tired of dealing with people shopping , 2 I liked the young man he was nice and seemed honest. It was his dead paw paws truck he didnt want to sell but bought a new car and has a new baby and trying to be responsible financially. He proved me right he was honest later. When I paid him I miss counted and gave him an extra 100. He cought it and gave it back to me. I didnt have a clue and he could have keep it and I would not have known. I was not sure exactly how much cash I took with me I knew it was more than I needed grabbing a few stacks in different stash spots. I didn't mind paying a little more to a guy with young family and an honest one at that.
Like I said I do have a little rust to address in the fenders rockers and cab corners and frame. Not much but I need to take care of it. Im hoping I can get this thig to last to 250k miles so about 8 years plus. Maybe 25 or 30 years after I find a low mileage old camary to daily and only drive the truck in bad weather and when I need a truck not a grocery getter or back and forth to work.
So whats the best way to stop rust damage form geting worse.
I sure forgot how much I like driving full sixe 4x4s. My last two daily drivers were a 98 Honda accord and a 2wd regular cab 97 ranger the last 9 to 12 years.

start with fluid film or wool wax
buy a gallon , wash and then get the entire underside , up in frame rails , tubes , rocker panels, the doors, A pillar , B pillar , tailgate , just everywhere you can
then as you get the rust fixed , just keep coating the truck with a gallon every mid to late September
a wire wheel and some good rust encapsulating primer can also be good for stuff bleeding through the paint.

I have had a chevy S-10 1999 version for 16 years and I am pretty sure I have a total of just under $13,000 in it all those years. It had 40K on it then and 350k now ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/05/full-1478-293405-s_10_1.jpg) Had a little ice problem with it this past winter, butall good now.......jk

Wish I could find another S-10 that was in decent shape, love that small Chevy. My daughter have a 98 4x4 with 4.3 . Rockers are rusted, 4x4 is not working, drivers window wont stay in track when put down, driver door has a truck to open it and something is wrong with the ignition it won't shut off and I have to disconnect the battery and alternator to shut it off. All minor but I have limited time. Dropped it off at my brother in laws to fix when he gets time. It runs and drives great defiantly got my money's worth out of it the 6 years my daughter drove it. I may fix cosmeticly beyond mechanical sound and make that my 15 year olds. My daughter gets a lot better gas mileage out of her jeep compass its more comfortable and there is more room in it for her dog.

Whoa wait a minute. The news about this post is you have cash that is not working for you. ? You do know staggering 1, 2, or 3 month CDS @4.18 % is better than jelly jars in the attic? Money available plus it works making you money. BECAUSE According to all the investors cash is just losing money everyday it's tucked away..... Yep, I keep some cash on hand at all times. Its piece of mind and strategic. Money you cant get to is useless and banks are not always open or close, and not having cash available right now can lead to missed opportunities when good deals pop up. I get close to the same rate cd' have been paying in my cash management accounts without it being locked down for my cash thats waiting on market dips or that I may need to use within 18 months. That way if I need it in a down market I dont have to sell at the bottom and lock losses in.

Let alone the prices. Newest vehicle we have is a 2018.
Let me sugar coat this

I bet you’ll be making a post on here within 8 years talking about buying a new truck lol. I don’t think that one’s going to last you 8 years.

It may not, if it last 5 I will have got my money's worth. It may go to one of the kids and not last a year or two. Heck had a woman start turn in fount of me on the way to work tonight she swearved back in her lane. The truck almost ate her car and wouldn't have survived the collision. Nothing is for sure but I know its similar to the 99 f 150 I got hit in and the impact sent me into a red oak at 55 so im confident iin its front impact survivability.

Over time it saves me a ton. Same here. Having said that, I’m buying a 2020 Lariat in a couple weeks……lol. That’s new to me. I don’t think I can sell the 2012 Sierra though, need a trapping truck. I’d hate to put a normal truck through some of the stuff I do.

My last resto I spent a bunch of hours with a pneumatic needle scaler. The next Spring, even after NO salt roads, the old saying rang true. Rust never sleeps.
