I've been wanting a good 2nd chainsaw to supplement my Husqvarna 350. Last night I won this Stihl at a banquet. I'm thinking it'll be a good backup saw, and especially good for TSI work. Has anyone tried this model?

What is TSI work?

I have experience with MS170.
The 172 replaces the 170.
The 170 was a home owner model with
no carb adjust and lame air filter design.
The chain provided new can easily be upgraded
to better Stihl picco model.
Stihl makes fine pro saws,
this is not one.
Good scoop, the price was right, run it.

I’ve got a172. It has been a good limbing saw.

Timber Stand Improvement = TSI

I looked up the carb online:

The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

Did you change the bar from 16 to 18"?

I could post and complain about mine but it might be me.

The stupid start assist or whatever that is sure makes starting it different than anything else I've ever started in my life what a pain.

The chain tensioning mechanism on the side of the bar made me want to throw it into the river. Turns out there's a little screw on the bottom side that strips the threads and falls out. It happens enough there is a second hole and threads to use when the first one messes up. You are supposed to go through and make sure thats tight before use.

The bar oil leaks all over heck but most saws do this I guess? The gas cap thing that keeps it from falling out is flimsy and doesn't keep it from falling out.

Id get another one now that I know the quirks but its still seems odd getting it going and using it sometimes.
