I know smoking isnt healthy and therefore frowned upon. I get that. About 480k people in the USA die from smoke related causes annually. But somehow, it's culturally acceptable to be overweight. Fat shaming people is considered insensitive but over 300k people in the USA die annually from complications of being overweight. So I ask, Why aren't overweight people shunned the same as smokers?

because your number is low

more like 110 million people are over weight

while I haven't ever quit smoking , losing weight isn't easy and you have to eat food , you just have to figure out how much is the right amount.

things are made to be cheap and taste good , cheep stuff is generally heavy on carb calories , good for you stuff like meat and veg are the highest priced foods.

the cigarette manufacturers got out of smokes and into food big time in the 80s and 90s , they have since sold but they applied the same marketing to foods and engineered them to be addictive as well.

Kraft, Oscar Meier , coolaid , jello , ritz ,chips a hoy , Oreo to name a few

How is it that some get away with smoking and some dont? Has to be some kind of resistance factor if we could only figure that out. I know you will die quicker smoking but that minority must have something going for them.

Geez, who can afford to smoke these days. I noticed getting gas the other day the price of smokes was over $11/pack. I remember buying them for .50 cents in a vending machine when I was young.

Theres a place for everything.

That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve heard in a long time. You gotta be on friggin crack if you think a drinker doesn’t effect the persons beside them……lol
I used to be that guy.
Have you ever been anywhere sober when there’s drinkers around? Or I’m guessing you’re “that guy”…….lol

Because a guy sitting in a restaurant enjoying one beer does not affect anyone. A guy smoking in a restaurant affects many people. Between the smell and second hand inhalation. Cigarette smoke stinks. I hated it as a kid and I still hate it to this day. Ive never smoked at all but I did used to dip in high school. Glad I gave that up! In my line of work utility contractor It seems like everyone smokes. My wife can smell it on me sometimes when I come home from work. No one is smelling another guys beer on you unless he poured it on you. That is why smoking has been vilified and Im glad it has. I remember the stink of when smoking was accepted in restaurants like waffle house. It was not a pleasant experience to eat at.

Let’s see if any LEOs chime in about smoking vs booze.
One beer isn’t bad, or 6 American beers I guess.

I don't care if its tobacco, weed, or booze, if you don't get by without than you need to look in the mirror and figure your why you can't.

I'm in WI, we are no slouches when it comes to booze consumption.
When I go out to eat I'd bet that at least 80% are drinking some type of alcohol.
I'm always sober.
the drinkers around me are always well behaved.
I haven't seen a disruptive drunk in I don't know how long.

When I was young and stupid I saw alot of what you mention, but now I hang in place with mostly older people you don't see it.

Dirty D , Wisconsin is just a different place , you could go into the local place and be sitting on a stool next to your grade school teacher and buy them a beer and have a good talk about back in the day. and that is when you are 23.

my son's old Sunday school teacher owns the bar with the best food in town so at 22 he is getting served by his old Sunday school teacher and it is totally normal.

Ask that question back when smoking was allowed on the major airlines. Smokers seem oblivious as to how obnoxious tabacco smoke is; especially in confined places.
On the other hand, a whiff of a Camel straight while outside is a different story.

I sure dont miss the stink of smoke and ash trays everywhere like it used to be. Smokers dont realize how bad they stink. There is a guy in matanance here at work that smells like stale smoke so bad i cant stand being in the booth for 2 hours after he walks in for 5 mins and leaves. After he gets in my equipment the equipment smells horrible most of the day.

They are nose blind to it. It changes their voice and they sure do age and get more wrinkles than non smokers. I have no idea why anyone would chose to do that to themselves.

Yep... my great-grandmother smoked until about 10 years before her death. She died in her 90s. My grandmother still smokes... she is 86. And neither of them have/had any lung/breathing and/or heart problems whatsoever.

I know most on here hated the old time doctors. You follow the recommendations and science of today’s doctors & CDC.
When I was a kid, everyone smoked everywhere, most of you are too young to remember that eh?…….lol

I miss being able to smoke anywhere I felt like it. No seat belts, kids in a pickup bed. Keeping your word was important. Signs were not in Mexican and a pocketknife wasn't a weapon.

That’s why Vegas felt so weird. The first day or two, I kept my smoking on the down low thinking security would boot me out or something…..lol
