Nope, nothing to do with gentrification. These bad actors are mostly teens.

I'm not even sure if there's ever a reason given by the mob other than to see and be seen, often coupled with some sort of celebratory event.

If I had to ascribe a cause, it would be the fact that these people can't have anything nice so they go somewhere nice and trash it.
