Looking at drills for 1.5-2" auger, Could any of you make a recommendation on a good drill that won't cost a fortune for augering dirt holes and pilot drilling earth anchors? I know I can do it by hand and will be doing some of that but when im close to the truck Id like to use a drill.

I used a dewalt to do mine last season get the bigger battery if you can i put 13 dirt holes in with mine in extremely rocky soil no issues

If you have a harbor freight close you can pick up some auger bits for wood and they will work. That’s what I use.Depends on what you want but you can pick up a small auger from Wally World or F&T sells some.As far as a drill I use a 20 volt Bauer from Harbor Freight. But I am cheap and don’t want to spend money on a Good drill.

Trapper Les I like your set up. That Milwaukee is a powerhouse.

I use the Flex drill the Lowes carries. My issue is finding and auger bit that doesn't dull out and quit digging in my soil.

I also run the Milwaukee hammer drill like trapper les. Works great

The quoted price. Kind of a shocker and I'm a cheap (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman).

Next to the drill is the Milwaukee weedwhacker, which comes in handy for summer trapping. The grass grows pretty fast where I am and sometimes a causeway from the corn/bean field is in order,or just to level the playing field around a set or a dog proof trap , is in order.

I knock the spot down before I ever get out the grubhoe or other digging tools. The grass comes back pretty fast.

I'd say anything but a dewalt, I've had 2 almost back to back that where junk.
Still drilled but, motor weak , slow.

Loving the Milwaukee, now have 3 total.

As a carpenter,Dewalt was very assessable, and I have a bunch of bare tools that will use the 20volt battery, but…. I started buying Milwaukee after I purchased the mud mixer for use with an ice auger, then I have collected the half inch hammer drill and a skillsaw as well. Along with the weed trimmer.

Makes nightstalkers augers look cheap. Not sure what s carbide tip would gain you for putting in dirt holes.

I have and sds drill that I use nightstalkers augers in and I have an adapter bir for using the tulip auger for softer ground or planting stuff in the garden.

Kinda depends on how many holes putting in if just a few less than a dz harbor freight rigid 20 volt if really putting them in might have to sacrifice and carry additional weight of something like a flex volt. Currently us a dewalt flex for angering 8 inch holes in 14 inches of ice and punched 22 holes before 6 amp battery died.
As additional info if possible get one with an additional handle as they snap around quick when hitting a root or rock, snap it out of your hand of mess up your wrist.( so I'm told) hehe

Whichever drill you decide on...get the handle attachment...so you can hold on to the drill when it hits a root or rock. And this allows the drill to be up on a tripod when you put it down instead of laying it flat in the dirt.

I have the same set up. The Milwaukee is a tank. I drill a lot of dirt holes with mine with a 2" auger and put a 3" auger on for gardening when I'm transplanting new plants.

I bought 2 rigid because of the warranty. They burnt up in 50 holes. I went back to Milwaukee 18 v. I did a test run on the rigid with a 4" auger planting 270 trees in April. 20 holes on 1 rigid, 30 on the other. finished the rest with my Milwaukee and its still going. You get what you pay for, and you don't want to be down while in the middle of know where.

I had an older 18v Milwaukee hammer drill that gave out on me the first year I used it with a 2” auger.

I bought a Hercules 20v from Harbor Freight, it comes with a 3 year on tool and 5 year warranty on the battery. That may be swapped.

I had the drill strip the gears after the first year, took in and they handed me a new one. It is still going strong the past 2 years.

Drill, charger and 5 AH battery was around $100

I bit the bullet and bought the Milwaukee hole hawg 18volt last year and it works great. But I have a bunch of Milwaukee batteries. The one at harbor freight looks like a solid unit for the price if you aren't invested in a battery platform

The drills you fellas are talking about are useless in hard ground. Those drills are meant for drilling screws into 2x4's or hammer drilling a 1/8" hole in brick for a screw

Then get you an auger from Tom Stalker with the SDS chuck welded on it so you can directly plug and play into your hammer drill. No adapter needed

I have a adapter that allows the use of standard bits when needed.

I Just bought the hercules with the five yr warranty tried it out in the yard with a few holes with a 2" auger it has plenty of power I'm gonna torture test it and see how it does they told me just to bring it to the counter and they would give me a knew one no questions at the store if it didnt work out

If I ever encounter hard ground, I’ll by the drill for that job… otherwise what I am running is more than enough. I am on year #2 .

I’m waiting for that particular Hercules to come on sale to use with an 8” Razor ice auger. I saw a reconditioned one with charger & battery on the reconditioned table just last week BUT the reconditioned only come with a 5-day warranty instead of a 5-year!!

I paid right at 100 for the drill battery and charger seems good quality you cant beat the warranty, I ran 5 or six holes with it real quick it has impressive torque. I have time to test it real good if it works out ill buy a second back up before fall, if not ill use its replacement around the house and get a milwaukee.

Don't skimp on your digging tools. It will come back to bite you later. Buy once, cry once.
