If it's made of plastic the first coon in that trap will have it chewed up and spit out

If they are a injection molded part like you suggest, would be a cost effective option. Could manufacture cheap but some might leave used chewed laying as trash. Would love to see trap manufacture offer DP with thin steel cap that hinges at dog attachment location. Could throw my bucket of golf balls in trash. Still better idea than putting a styrofoam cup over 'em. Imagine the pieces that is chewed into.

Golf balls still let the bait get wet albeit slower than open top. Ive had golf balls dissappear fro. A trap site too. I always figured another coon took it away. I couldn't imagine someone using Styrofoam cups.

The only time I cover DPs is if there is a significant amount of rain in the forecast, and that's usually only one night here and there. Styrofoam cups work great in this situation. Pick them up and stack together and put away until needed again. If a catch is made I pick up the biggest pieces and move on.

As I’ve noted before, we seem to catch bigger coon in DPs that have a cap on them.
This spring, I bought 7 dozen Z-caps. They’re metal, white, and attached a decoy cord to them. Then I made another 4 dozen caps with 1-inch sections of pvc pipe, to which I glued a fender washer. Everything was sprayed white and cord attached. I think I have <35-cents per cap into them. Time wise, it was easier to buy. But if you have the time, making your own isn’t a bad way to spend an evening.
My buddy thinks the coon will chew the plastic ones to pieces. We’ll see. They certainly don’t chew the metal ones!

The decoy cord gets wrapped up pretty well sometimes. But we’ve only had one break after several years of use.
I tend to over think things so I put a drop or two of scent on the covers. Or on a twig above the trap. Jon doesn’t. Last fall he used traps with dry cat food that hadn’t been cleaned out for over a year. We think the white cap, coupled with it being movable, got their attention.

I like putting drop of scent on cap for lazy anamals.
