Just saw the news,,, a woman had a bat in her house that was confirmed with rabies.
She took precautionary rabies treatments before the official confirmation.
She doesn’t believe that she was bitten but she didn’t want to take chances.
This was in my town,,,
A very valid reason for concern,,, that bat didn’t develop it on its own… and with the exploding raccoon population,,, it doesn’t take much for an extremely dangerous situation to happen.
Not saying it’s inevitable just saying

The ingredients are there!!
I can’t believe the ignorance from some people who were commenting… saying it s unnecessary fear mongering.
These same people have no concept of reality and how bad the raccoon situation really is.

We trappers have screamed until we are blue in the face… it’s not a problem until it’s a problem.

Washing State has lots of rabid bats and has for years. Around 16 years ago, in my brother's neighborhood near Chehalis, a baby died after a rabid bad ended up in his crib and he chewed on it.

Not tO my understanding. One contracted, they tend to fly off and not effect thE entire colony.

Bats are vermin. Way worse than mice imo. I don’t understand why they always get such good press.

They are responsible for the vast majority of post exposure rabies shots in humans. The only mosquitos they eat are by accident. They eat mostly night pollinating moths. Not to mention the property damage they can cause.

Many bats carry the virus without it noticeably affecting them, sometimes for years, you don’t have to get bitten, you can catch it by breathing it in, people have contracted it by breathing in the virus, yes it doesn’t live long outside the host and it’s extremely rare for it to happen but it can, and the denser the population the more likely rare as it is for it to happen it can still happen, the only times i know it has was when people (researchers) where in a high population colony with a high rate of infected bats

Truth all you have to do is watch them around a streetlight, when I was a kid the target store near our house apparently had a colony living somewhere on the roof at dusk you would see a cloud of them rising from the roof then darting around the parking lot lights and it wasn’t skeeters they were after

Most people don’t know that their the no1 carrier of rabies or even what rabies is and kids are the worse ones I’ve seen several time them trying to catch bats trapped in stores or malls, a few years ago at mall of America they did at least two got bitten and had to get shots, I had tried to stop them but they were actually egged on by their parents

foxkidd44,
Rabies has been in your area (and everywhere else) before you were ever there.

Use standard precautions and common sense. You'll be ok.

Bats actually have one of the longest incubation periods for rabies compared to other mammals. They are contagious during the long incubation period but show no symptoms. This generally ends up infecting the majority of the colony.
