if you are looking for quiet neither.

what do your laws require for night shooting ?

22lr sub sonics are about as loud as a staple gun , supers you know there is shooting

if it is close range and you want to be quiet , heavy and slow , 45 acp is never super sonic and racoons seem to stop very quickly with 45acp even ball ammo from the few we have shot with them.

Neither will be quiet. For max noise reduction you need to be subsonic. Those will have the loud Crack breaking the sound barrier. Many guys have been disappointed thinking that would get subsonic noise levels shooting supersonic guns.

I dont believe you will get much difference in sound between the two. Out of my stable If wanting max shhh like tha baby is asleep in the couch I would go with a heavy subsonic 38/357 350 legend if moving up to supper sonic i would just go with suppressed 7mm08 its about as quiet as supresed supper sonic .22lr to my ear.

But I have several suppressed options/combos.

Do you have any friends with threaded guns you can put your can on and see if you will be happy with how it sounds before buying something new. Maybe a range that rents?

that close I would go 22mag with some heavier bullets like the 50gr or 45gr

that would be my choice but maybe others want to weigh in on effectiveness of 22mag vs 17hmr at 30-50 yards

For a suppressor to really work the bullet must be subsonic, otherwise you'll get a CRACK as the bullet breaks the sound barrier. .22 mag and .22 lr shoot the same weight bullets, the mag has no advantage with slow moving bullets.

A .22 would be your best bet. Could also look into some of the large caliber air rifles.

Either one would do what you need. I have more experience with the 17 hmr hunting coyote with hounds. Many coyotes been relocated over the years using that 17. In your case, if you currently dont have either, id get the caliber you think youd get the most use out of for other potential adventures...

Winchester and several other companies make Subsonic ammo for the 22 Mag. They typically shoot a heavy bullet so still some decent energy at 50 yards.

Save yourself $. If you’re looking for a 30 yard porch gun look no further than a 22 lr suppressed if that turns your crank….

definately 22lr! And with barrel lengths up to 10" you don't have to buy subsonic ammo to have it be subsonic.

Just coyotes from that close? I use 22LR CB Longs on wolf. The little 22LR doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

They break the sound barrier around 5" I had my mark 2 cuts to 4.25 for that purpose when I had it threaded on the recommendation of Tim at suppresed arrmerment systems [Linked Image]

If you are targeting coyotes, .22 mag all the way.

If you reload, I would go with a 223 and load 55 gr Vmax or similar lightly constructed bullet to 1050 FPS, it is suppressed 22 LR quiet and hits with more authority than the 22 LR rounds. Hodgdon has subsonic 223 loads listed on their reloading data center.
