Any idea what this moth is and there’s a cacoon next to it

Maybe,looked it up,if it dies in a couple days might try to preserve it,it’s cool and hasn’t moved in a day

Cecropia moth. Back when I was a kid on the farm they were fairly common. The caterpillars in the late stages can be the size of your thumb and quite colorful.

I think moths are neat
(except the ones that eat clothes and get in food)

Their caterpillars eat my walnut leaves and drop what looks like mini hand grenades on the deck.
