Does anyone here have any idea what a light 4- 5 weight jersey steer should bring?

Around $3 a lb assuming pure Jersey in reasonable condition

There tender but the steaks are smaller.

For their small size they can put off some milk. I had 4 of them growing up u could put 3 calves each on daily til they got on feed then give em a new baby lol. Bought my 1st 2 vehicles w beef

Some of the best beef dad raised came off dairy cows. He was partial to Charlais over Milking Shorthorn, we had a Brown Swiss that put really good frames on her calves and crossed well on Angus/Black Baldy/Hereferd. Jersey lacked frame size but finished well. Holstein/Guernsey had to much bone.

BTW, many composite breeds have a shot of Milking Shorthorn in the background for the bag quality. I know Santa Getrudis and Beefmaster do.

JMO, but if I were shopping for a home milker that could milk and feed off a calf for the freezer I would look for an old fashioned roan Shorthorn.

I would guess around the 3.30 price and anything better is a bonus

You might be better off to feed it out and butcher if you plan on needing meat.......good prices to sell but bad to buy beef

Thanks to everyone, I bought a couple bottle calves and let my cow raise them so I had a surplus, myself I like the yellow fat on a big ole jersey steer cooked medium rare or a big ole pork steak cooked extra well done on the grill.

We bought a few bottle calves about 9 years ago and did the same thing. Still have one that is half jersey half brown swiss who is bred to either an angus or hereford bull every year.and has raised me some very nice calves over the years. I heard bottle calves are way high now.
First dairy calves we had butchered were holsteins - never seemed to put on much meat..........crossing a dairy cow with a beef bull makes much nicer calves to finish.
This time of year not too hard to feed a 500 lb calf in a lot and just go mow and bag some grass every day..........supplement with a bit of corn and in a few months enjoy some beef. Be a good summer project for a youngster.

We have eaten a few jersey angus cross for beef. They were very good. Holsteins due to the genetics for milk grow to be big and thus don't finish real well until older or fed a lot of grain in a really nutrient rich diet. Putting beef breeds in the mix gets better finishing at lower weights from my experience. If I am going to eat a Holstein I will eat a cull cow that has good finish. Many of those weigh 1600-1800 lbs. when culled.
