Saturday I competed in a strongman competition at the Norskadalen Mid Summer festival, in Coon Valley, WI. Its a beautiful venue in the hills of the driftless area of Wisconsin.
The competition was 5 events:
Log press, 200# for repetitions. I got it to my chest (cleaned), but I failed to get 1 overhead at all. My personal best on a log is 175#.
Farmer's hold for time. This was 220# in each hand, just hold it as long as you could. I made 20 seconds.
Carry medley. We had to carry a 175# beer keg, a 184# stone and a 75# shield 50 feet. I completed the carry in 32 seconds.
Natural stone to shoulder was a 184# stone, from the ground and onto a shoulder, for reps in a minute. I got two.
Last was a hammer throw. Had to use one arm, no spinning, just for distance. I got 25 feet, 8 inches.

I came in 4th (out of 5) in the Master's division, which has no weight classes, just have to be over 40. The other 4 guys were all a LOT bigger than I was.

Here's some pics:

Kyle, you are an animal.

Haven't had your first hernia yet?

Knock on wood, I've had no real major issues. Couple little tweaks here and there, but nothing a chiro or therapy couldn't fix.

Proper form goes a long way to preventing injury.

The night of competition the entire body is just tired, unless I hurt something bad.
The next day I feel the bumps and bruises.
Today I feel the soreness.

But I'll be back to lifting in a few days. Next competition is September 5th.

To the bigger guys? I'd bet its closer to 75-plus. Competition weigh in I was 193 in my shorts. Two of the other guys were pushing 300.

This is my fourth year competing. I do 3 comp's a year, all for fun. I just turned 48, two of the other guys were well into their fifties. I am hoping to keep doing this a while.

Seems like a good day for the event . Lovely country.

Always have liked the strongman Celtic sports.

And the beautiful tartan colours of each clan represented. I suppose your tartan colours also represent your tradition of clan too.

Thank you for sharing . Well done.

Stone to shoulder is probably one of the more painful events. Forearms get tore up from gripping the stone against your chest. Shoulder gets bruised, side of the head gets bruised, ears get scraped.

That said, its probably my favorite event.

Cajun, I've got a basic home gym setup. Lots of full body stuff. Deadlifts, squats, overhead presses. There's not much bench press crossover to strongman, so I don't do that.
I do a rotation of higher rep (8-10) to low rep (1-2) to work on muscle mass and peak strength.
I also have some strongman implements at home. A variety of natural stones, an axle bar and a log.
There's a small gym a half hour away that has strongman saturdays. They have a full range of strongman equipment. So I can practice for the specific events coming up. And the coach is a strongman competitor also, and a darn good one.

nice! my dad just recently got a set up like that.
that's what I was thinking you would do(deadlifts squats overhead presses).
I pretty much do the same except the stones and stuff.
I watch a lot of strongman comps and it looks interesting and fun.

Strongman is a blast. The camaraderie at an event is amazing. The different events keep it interesting. There's as much technique and strategy as there is brute strength.
Have fun lifting and good luck to you.
